Palit to bring NVIDIA’s P106 out of retirement to crypto mining GPU

  • NVIDIA’s board member is planning to relaunch its abandoned P106 GPU models for crypto mining
  • The GPUs are expected to be solely designed for mining operations
  • NVIDIA will not allow miners to mine digital currencies in GeForce GPUs

Crypto mining sector is once more about to boom as Palit, one of the board members of NVIDIA, registered twelve new P106-based cryptocurrency mining graphic cards on Monday. The registration was done with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). It is known that all twelve different models were based on the Pascal GPU architecture-backed P106.

Following the move of Palit, it seems like he is about to reintroduce those most famous crypto mining graphics cards. As the same cards were launched back in 2017 during the first mining boom. However, the cards faced retirement soon due to the abundance of inventory that was required to be cleaned out after the prices began to crash.

Specification of the crypto mining graphic cards

Palit has listed twelve crypto mining graphics cards with the EEC. However, all the graphic cards are not gonna make it to the final release. Specifically, there are two different variants of the P106 GPU, including P106-90 and P106-100. The high-end P106-100 card packs 1280 CUDA cores and 6 gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. In contrast, the other model packs 768 CUDA cores and 3GB of GDDR5 memory. The P106-90 would not do any good for mining Ethereum tokens as the DAG is 4.11 GB, and there are only 3 GB of memory available in the model. However, we cannot conclude that the low-end model is useless, as it’s not for mining Ethereum.

Moreover, the models are expected to feature standard PCBs. Such PCBs will consist of a custom cooling design. However, the official CMP lineup of the brand will lack display connectors. Indeed, the versions cannot be resold in the used graphics card market. The aforementioned fact concludes that the models are solely designed for crypto mining only. And the cards are expected to be shipped in bulk to mining farms to increase their mining power by installing the models in their system.

No more cryptocurrency mining on GeForce GPUs

In recent weeks, NVIDIA was observed struggling to meet its GPU demand in the market. Moreover, the GeForce GPUs were observed not reaching gamers in the market because of cryptocurrency miners. Following the scenario, the manufacturer planned to launch the software to ban crypto mining operations on the GPUs. However, now the miners have no worries as the new solely designed for mining models are about to be reintroduced in the crypto market.
