It’s about making quasi-real: PlayStation creator on the metaverse

  • PlayStation inventor Ken Kutaragi is not really favourable when it comes to the metaverse.
  • Where a prominent entity like Facebook rebranded itself as Meta, someone finds the concept pointless.
  • It’s about making quasi-real in the virtual world, says Kutaragi.

The crypto-related terms like NFTs, Metaverse, etc., are becoming quite popular lately, especially after Facebook rebranded itself as Meta late last year.

But maybe the fascinating 3D virtual worlds are not fascinating for everyone. One of them is the inventor of the popular video game console PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, who happens to be the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Being a Polished Avatar rather than your real self?

He recently expressed his views about the metaverse in an interview. He argues that this is not the next significant step in the tech world. For others, it might be a way to socialize and unify, but it has dividing functions for him.

According to Kutaragi, Being in the real world is important. He thinks metaverse is about making quasi-real in the virtual world. And that he can’t see any point in doing it. He raised a question about being a polished avatar rather than being your own self. He sees it no different from anonymous message board sites.

He talked about his views on virtual reality headsets separately, which would isolate you from the real world. And he says he can’t agree with that and finds them simply annoying.

But not everyone has the same point of view. There are also some people who think of metaverse as a significant opportunity in the future.

World’s largest asset management firm, Grayscale, recently envisioned that the sector would be valued at more than $1 trillion in the coming years. It thinks that the metaverse is not just limited to the gaming sector and expands beyond it. There are a lot of sectors deployed in the industry like digital events, social commerce and creator monetization etc.

On the other hand, Haim Israel, a strategist in the Bank of America, sees metaverse to be a great opportunity. And that it is definitely going to be a big opportunity for the whole ecosystem if the right platforms are provided.

Everyone has different views when it comes to new technologies. Some people accept them with open arms, and then some people raise questions about them. Same with the case of the metaverse, where different people have different opinions. It’s interesting to note that some people find the virtual world quite exciting and aren’t hesitant while trading and investing. There is someone who finds it pointless and thinks it has dividing functions.
