What is Tokenomics?

Tokenomics encompasses all the economic design decisions embedded in a cryptocurrency or token — essentially the rules that determine who gets what, how much is issued, and what incentives exist for holding or using the token.

Key elements analysts examine in a project’s tokenomics:

• Total and maximum supply: How many tokens will ever exist? Is supply capped (like Bitcoin’s 21 million) or inflationary (issued continuously)? Can the supply be burned or reduced?
• Circulating supply: How many tokens are actually available in the market now? Large gaps between circulating and total supply can mean significant future token releases that dilute existing holders.
• Distribution: What portion went to founders, investors, the development team, the community, or an ecosystem fund? When are locked allocations scheduled to vest and enter circulation?
• Emission schedule: At what rate are new tokens issued over time — and does that rate change?
• Utility and demand drivers: Does the token have a function within its ecosystem — such as paying fees, governance voting, or accessing services — that creates organic demand?
• Token burning: Some protocols destroy tokens under certain conditions to reduce supply over time.

Poorly designed tokenomics can undermine a project regardless of its technical merit. Common problems include excessive team allocations with short vesting periods, inflationary emissions with no demand-side offset, and tokens with no clear utility beyond speculation.

A project’s tokenomics are typically disclosed in its whitepaper or documentation and can be partially verified on-chain by examining the smart contracts that govern token issuance and vesting schedules.
