Sponsored Content Policy
The Market Periodical (“TMP”) accepts certain forms of paid content, but never at the expense of reader trust. This policy explains what sponsored content is, how we label it, and the firm boundary we keep between advertising and independent journalism.
What Sponsored Content Is
Sponsored content — sometimes called native advertising or branded content — is material that a third party has paid to place on our site. It may take the form of an article, a guide, a listing, or another format designed to sit within the reading experience. Because it is paid for, it is fundamentally different from the independent editorial reporting our journalists produce, and we treat it accordingly.
Clear and Conspicuous Labelling
We believe readers should always know when they are looking at paid content. Sponsored material on TMP is clearly and conspicuously labelled with wording such as “Sponsored,” “Paid partnership,” “In partnership with,” or “Advertisement,” placed where a reasonable reader will see it. We do not disguise advertising as independent editorial, and we do not use labels that are vague, hidden, or misleading.
The Wall Between Advertising and Editorial
There is a strict separation — often called a “church-and-state” wall — between our commercial arrangements and our newsroom. In practice:
- Advertisers and sponsors do not receive editorial control over our independent reporting.
- Paying for sponsored placement does not buy favourable coverage, a positive review, a higher ranking, or the suppression of legitimate criticism elsewhere on the site.
- Our editors retain final say over what our independent journalism says, consistent with our Editorial Policy and Ethics commitments.
Editorial Standards Still Apply
Being paid does not exempt content from our standards. Sponsored pieces must still be lawful, accurate, and not misleading. We may decline, edit, or require changes to sponsored material that is deceptive, makes unsupported claims, or conflicts with our values. Where a factual error appears in any content, our Corrections process applies.
How Sponsored Content Differs From Other Formats
To keep things transparent, it helps to distinguish three commercial relationships:
| Type | Who writes it | How it is paid |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsored content | Provided or shaped by the advertiser, reviewed by us | Advertiser pays for placement; always labelled |
| Display advertising | Advertiser’s own creative (banners, units) | Standard ad placement, visibly an ad |
| Affiliate links | Our independent editorial team | We may earn a commission if you act on a link |
Affiliate links appear inside our own independent articles and are covered separately by our Affiliate Disclosure. Display advertising is self-evidently an advertisement. Sponsored content is the paid, labelled format described on this page.
Disclosure Practices and Reader Trust
Clear disclosure is not a formality for us — it is the foundation of the relationship we have with our readers. We would rather a reader know exactly what they are reading than gain a short-term commercial advantage from ambiguity. Consistent, honest labelling protects that trust and keeps our independent journalism credible.
Advertiser Guidelines and Prohibited Categories
We reserve the right to decline any advertising or sponsorship at our discretion. In general, we will not accept content that is unlawful, fraudulent, or deceptive; that promotes scams, guaranteed returns, or “get-rich-quick” schemes; that infringes intellectual property; that contains hateful, discriminatory, or explicit material; or that we judge to be harmful or misleading to our audience — particularly given the financial nature of our readership. Sponsored financial content must be consistent with the risk warnings in our Disclaimer.
