Frequently asked questions

Do you store my balances?

No. Everything is saved in your browser’s local storage. We have no account system for holdings and never receive your data.

Will it sync across devices?

Not on the free tier — because data stays local for privacy, each device keeps its own copy. Pro adds cross-device sync and projections.

The Complete Guide to Tracking a Multi-Asset Portfolio

Knowing what you own, what it cost, and how it is performing sounds obvious, yet most people who hold crypto, stocks and forex have no single, honest view of their whole position. A portfolio tracker closes that gap. This guide goes beyond simply logging trades: it covers portfolio construction, reading cost basis and profit-and-loss correctly, allocation and rebalancing, position sizing, and why a local, browser-stored tracker protects your privacy.

Portfolio Construction and Diversification

A portfolio is not a pile of trades—it is a set of deliberate decisions about how much of your capital sits in each asset and asset class. Diversification is the practice of not letting any single position, sector or correlated group dominate. In practice, crypto assets often move together, so holding ten different coins is far less diversified than it looks. True diversification usually means spreading across genuinely different return drivers.

Start by writing down your target allocation—for example, how much in crypto versus equities versus cash—then use the tracker to compare your actual allocation against that target. The gap between intention and reality is where most portfolio problems hide.

Cost basis, unrealised and realised P&L

  • Cost basis is what you actually paid, including fees. Recording it accurately is the foundation of every other number.
  • Unrealised P&L is the paper gain or loss on positions you still hold. It moves constantly with price and is not locked in.
  • Realised P&L is the gain or loss you actually captured when you sold. This is the figure that matters for performance and, in many jurisdictions, for tax.

Separating these two prevents a common psychological trap: treating unrealised gains as money you already have. Until a position is closed, its value can still evaporate.

Allocation, Rebalancing and Position Sizing

Over time, winners grow and losers shrink, so your allocation drifts away from your plan. Rebalancing is the discipline of periodically trimming what has grown too large and topping up what has shrunk, bringing you back to target. It forces you to take some profit from strength and add to weakness—the opposite of chasing.

Position sizing decides how much to commit to any one idea. A common approach is to risk only a small, fixed percentage of the portfolio on any single position, so that no one loss can seriously damage the whole. The tracker helps here by showing each holding’s weight as a share of the total.

A short worked example

Say your plan is 60% equities and 40% crypto. A strong crypto rally pushes your actual mix to 55/45. The tracker surfaces that drift. You decide to sell enough crypto to return to 60/40, locking in some realised gain and reducing concentration risk—a rules-based decision, not an emotional one. You might pair this with price alerts at levels where you would review the allocation again.

Privacy of a Local, Self-Custodied Tracker

Because this tracker stores your holdings in your own browser rather than on a server, your financial data does not leave your device. There is no account to breach and no shared database linking your identity to your positions. The trade-off is that the data lives only where you enter it: clearing your browser storage removes it, and it does not sync across devices. Keep your own backup if the record matters to you.

Is my data safe if it is stored in the browser?

It stays on your device and is not transmitted to us, which is good for privacy. But “local” also means “only local”—there is no cloud backup, so treat clearing your browser data with care and keep your own records.

How often should I rebalance?

There is no single right answer. Many people rebalance on a fixed schedule (say quarterly) or when an allocation drifts beyond a set threshold. Rebalancing too often can raise fees and, where applicable, taxes.
