Dash (DASH) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #91 by market capitalisation. It has a capped maximum supply of 18,920,000 DASH, of which 68% is already in circulation. DASH currently trades about 96% below its all-time high of $1,493.59. It launched around 2014-01-19.
Dash is a peer-to-peer digital currency that originated as a fork of Bitcoin in January 2014, initially under the name Darkcoin before rebranding in 2015. It introduced two notable features absent from Bitcoin at launch: InstantSend, which locks transactions in seconds using a quorum of masternodes, and PrivateSend, a coin-mixing feature offering optional transaction obfuscation based on the CoinJoin protocol. Dash operates on a proof-of-work mining mechanism similar to Bitcoin but uses the X11 hashing algorithm, which was designed to be more energy-efficient on specialised hardware.
A distinctive aspect of Dash's architecture is its two-tier network. The first tier consists of miners who validate transactions and secure the chain. The second tier is composed of masternodes, nodes that hold a collateral of 1,000 DASH and provide advanced network services including InstantSend, PrivateSend, and governance functions. Masternodes receive a portion of each block reward, creating an economic incentive for their operation. Dash has a self-funding treasury mechanism whereby a percentage of block rewards is directed to a decentralised fund, which masternode operators vote to allocate toward development, marketing, and ecosystem projects.
