What is Proof of Work?

Proof of Work is a blockchain consensus mechanism in which participants — called miners — compete to solve computationally intensive puzzles to validate transactions and earn the right to add a new block to the chain.

Proof of Work (PoW) was introduced by Bitcoin in 2009 and remains its consensus mechanism today. The core idea is that producing a valid block requires a demonstrable expenditure of real-world computational effort, making it economically costly to attack or rewrite the ledger.

To add a block, a miner must find a nonce — a number — that, when combined with the block’s data and hashed through a cryptographic function (SHA-256 for Bitcoin), produces an output below a certain target value. Finding this nonce requires brute-force trial and error; there is no shortcut. The difficulty of finding a valid nonce is adjusted periodically so that blocks are produced at roughly the target rate.

Key properties of Proof of Work:

  • Security through cost: An attacker who wants to alter the blockchain would need to redo the work for the target block and all subsequent blocks faster than honest miners are adding new blocks — a task that becomes prohibitively expensive on large networks.
  • 51% attack risk: If a single entity controls more than half of the network’s total mining power, they could potentially rewrite recent blocks. On large PoW networks, acquiring this share of hardware is extremely expensive.
  • Energy intensity: PoW’s security guarantee is directly tied to physical resource expenditure, which means it requires significant electricity.

Proof of Work is sometimes contrasted with Proof of Stake, which replaces computational effort with economic collateral. Ethereum transitioned from PoW to PoS in 2022; Bitcoin continues to use PoW by design and consensus among its community.
