06 What Is Litecoin?
About Litecoin
Litecoin (LTC) is a infrastructure cryptocurrency ranked #24 by market capitalisation. It has a capped maximum supply of 84,000,000 LTC, of which 92% is already in circulation. LTC currently trades about 83% below its all-time high of $410.26. It launched around 2011-10-08.
Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency launched in October 2011 by former Google engineer Charlie Lee as a direct fork of Bitcoin's codebase. It was designed to offer faster transaction confirmations and a larger total supply than Bitcoin, targeting everyday payments. Litecoin produces a new block every 2.5 minutes versus Bitcoin's 10, uses the Scrypt proof-of-work hashing algorithm, and has a fixed maximum supply of 84 million LTC, four times Bitcoin's 21 million cap.
Litecoin has historically served as a testbed for Bitcoin protocol improvements; Segregated Witness and the Lightning Network were both activated on Litecoin before Bitcoin. The MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) upgrade, activated in 2022, introduced optional privacy features. LTC's price movements have traditionally correlated closely with Bitcoin, rising and falling with broader crypto cycles. Halving events, which cut the block reward roughly every four years, are closely watched, with the most recent in August 2023 reducing the reward from 12.5 to 6.25 LTC per block.

09 Litecoin FAQ & Related Coins
Litecoin FAQ
How is Litecoin different from Bitcoin?
Litecoin shares Bitcoin's architecture but differs in parameters: 2.5-minute block time versus 10, 84 million supply versus 21 million, and Scrypt instead of SHA-256. These aimed at faster, cheaper payments. Litecoin also added optional privacy through MWEB, a feature Bitcoin's mainchain does not natively offer.
What is the Litecoin halving?
Every 840,000 blocks u2014 roughly four years u2014 the LTC block reward is cut in half, reducing new supply issuance. The August 2023 halving reduced the reward to 6.25 LTC. The next is expected around mid-2027. Halvings reduce miner revenue, which can affect sell pressure on newly minted coins.
Does MWEB make Litecoin private?
MimbleWimble Extension Blocks, activated in 2022, let users optionally move LTC into a parallel block space where amounts and some address information are obscured. MWEB is not mandatory; transparent transactions remain the default, so Litecoin is not a fully private coin, and MWEB adoption among wallets and exchanges has been gradual.
What risks does Litecoin face?
Litecoin must establish a distinct use case where Bitcoin dominates as digital gold and many networks compete on payments. Its price often tracks Bitcoin, lacking independent catalysts. Some regulated exchanges have delisted it over MWEB privacy features. It also has a smaller developer community than leading smart-contract platforms.
Is Litecoin a good investment?
Litecoin (LTC) is a volatile, high-risk asset (ranked #24 by market capitalisation), currently trading at $60.66. Whether it suits you depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and how it fits your wider portfolio. Never invest more than you can afford to lose. This is information, not financial advice.
Litecoin price prediction: what could LTC be worth?
No one can reliably predict cryptocurrency prices. Its all-time high was $410.26, and LTC now trades about 83% below that level. Litecoin's long-term value depends on adoption, liquidity, regulation and broad market cycles rather than any single forecast. Treat price targets you see elsewhere as speculation, not guarantees.
How do I buy Litecoin?
Litecoin (LTC) can be bought on major cryptocurrency exchanges that list it. Compare fees, security and supported regions, verify your account, deposit funds, then place a buy order for LTC. For larger holdings, consider moving coins to self-custody.
What determines the price of Litecoin?
The LTC price is set by live supply and demand across exchanges, and moves with trading volume, liquidity, exchange flows, macro conditions, regulation and overall market sentiment.
