03 Fundamentals & Business

Visa Inc. operates the world's largest retail electronic payments network, connecting consumers, merchants, financial institutions, and governments in more than 200 countries and territories. Visa does not issue cards or extend credit; it earns revenue from payment volumes, transaction fees, and data processing. The company processed over $15 trillion in payment volume in fiscal year 2024. Its VisaNet network handles tens of thousands of transactions per second, making it one of the most critical pieces of global financial infrastructure.

04 Crypto Exposure

Visa has invested steadily in crypto-adjacent infrastructure. It enables crypto debit and prepaid cards through partnerships with Coinbase, Crypto.com, and other exchanges, settling transactions in fiat on its network. Visa piloted USDC settlement on the Solana blockchain for select merchant acquirers, allowing stablecoin-denominated settlement to bypass traditional fiat rails. The firm also holds patents related to digital currency and central bank digital currency interoperability. Visa's approach is network-agnostic: it aims to sit atop any payment layer, digital or traditional.

07 More

How does Visa make money from crypto card programs?

When a consumer spends cryptocurrency via a Visa-branded card, the exchange or wallet provider converts crypto to fiat at point of sale. Visa earns its standard interchange and processing fees on those fiat transactions, the same economics as any other card spend. Crypto is the funding source; Visa's rails handle the settlement.

Is Visa testing stablecoin payments?

Yes. Visa has run pilots allowing merchant acquirers to receive USDC stablecoin settlements on the Solana blockchain rather than traditional bank wires. These pilots are limited and targeted at reducing cross-border settlement latency, but they represent a tangible experiment with non-fiat settlement.

What are the main risks for Visa investors?

Risks include regulatory pressure on interchange fees, competition from account-to-account payment networks that bypass card rails, central bank digital currencies that could disintermediate card networks, economic slowdowns reducing consumer spending volumes, and the long-term structural risk that stablecoins or crypto payment layers erode Visa's network utility.
