06 What Is USDC?
About USDC
USDC (USDC) is a stablecoins cryptocurrency ranked #6 by market capitalisation. Its circulating supply is 73,962,627,119 USDC, with no fixed maximum. USDC currently trades about 4% below its all-time high of $1.04.
USD Coin (USDC) is a regulated fiat-backed stablecoin issued by Circle Internet Financial, originally co-founded with Coinbase under the Centre Consortium framework. Each USDC token is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, with reserves held in cash and short-duration US Treasury securities at regulated US financial institutions. Circle publishes monthly reserve attestations conducted by Deloitte, providing a higher level of reserve transparency than most stablecoin competitors.
USDC operates across multiple blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche, functioning as a regulated digital dollar for use in DeFi protocols, cross-border payments, and institutional settlement. Its price stability relies on the same arbitrage mechanism common to asset-backed stablecoins: redemption at par with Circle maintains the market peg. USDC faced a brief depeg to approximately 0.87 dollars in March 2023 when Silicon Valley Bank — which held a portion of its cash reserves — was placed into FDIC receivership, before recovering after the FDIC guaranteed deposits. This illustrated that even transparent stablecoins carry custodial bank risk.

09 USDC FAQ & Related Coins
USDC FAQ
How is USDC different from USDT?
Both target a 1.00 dollar peg but differ in transparency. USDC publishes monthly Deloitte attestations and holds reserves solely in cash and US Treasuries at regulated banks. Tether's reserves are more diverse and attestations less frequent. Circle is a licensed US money transmitter pursuing compliance with US and EU regulators, making USDC preferred for regulated institutional use.
What happened to USDC in March 2023?
USDC briefly lost its peg after Circle disclosed about 3.3 billion dollars of cash reserves were held at Silicon Valley Bank, which was closed by regulators. USDC traded as low as 0.87 dollars as holders feared losses. The peg restored after the US Treasury and FDIC guaranteed all SVB deposits, demonstrating that peg stability depends partly on custodian bank health.
Is USDC safe to hold as a cash substitute?
USDC is more price-stable than volatile crypto, but it is not equivalent to insured bank deposits. Risks include Circle's operational and credit risk, custodian bank failures, smart contract vulnerabilities, and potential regulatory actions. It is not directly FDIC-insured. This is not financial advice.
What is USDC used for in DeFi?
USDC is among the most widely used DeFi assets. It serves as collateral in lending protocols such as Aave and Compound, as a liquidity pair on DEXes such as Uniswap and Curve, and as settlement currency in stablecoin swap pools. Its regulatory compliance makes it preferred for institutional DeFi and audited-reserve requirements.
Is USDC a good investment?
USDC (USDC) is a volatile, high-risk asset (ranked #6 by market capitalisation), currently trading at $1.00. Whether it suits you depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and how it fits your wider portfolio. Never invest more than you can afford to lose. This is information, not financial advice.
USDC price prediction: what could USDC be worth?
No one can reliably predict cryptocurrency prices. Its all-time high was $1.04, and USDC now trades about 4% below that level. USDC's long-term value depends on adoption, liquidity, regulation and broad market cycles rather than any single forecast. Treat price targets you see elsewhere as speculation, not guarantees.
How do I buy USDC?
USDC (USDC) can be bought on major cryptocurrency exchanges that list it. Compare fees, security and supported regions, verify your account, deposit funds, then place a buy order for USDC. For larger holdings, consider moving coins to self-custody.
What determines the price of USDC?
The USDC price is set by live supply and demand across exchanges, and moves with trading volume, liquidity, exchange flows, macro conditions, regulation and overall market sentiment.
