About BNB
BNB (BNB) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #4 by market capitalisation. It has a capped maximum supply of 200,000,000 BNB, of which 67% is already in circulation. BNB currently trades about 44% below its all-time high of $1,369.99. It launched around 2017-07-08.
BNB (formerly Binance Coin) is the native utility and gas token of the BNB Chain ecosystem, which comprises BNB Smart Chain (BSC) and BNB Beacon Chain. Originally issued in 2017 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum during Binance's initial coin offering, BNB was later migrated to its own blockchain infrastructure. BNB Smart Chain uses a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus model, allowing a limited set of 21 to 29 elected validators to produce blocks with short block times of approximately three seconds.
BNB serves multiple roles within the Binance ecosystem: it is used to pay trading fees on the Binance exchange (with a discount), as gas on BNB Smart Chain, and as collateral in DeFi protocols built on the chain. Binance conducts quarterly token burns — destroying BNB based on trading volumes and a real-time auto-burn formula tied to BNB's price — reducing total supply over time toward a target ceiling.
