XRP (XRP) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #5 by market capitalisation. It has a capped maximum supply of 100,000,000,000 XRP, of which 63% is already in circulation. XRP currently trades about 59% below its all-time high of $3.65.
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source, public blockchain developed by Ripple Labs and launched in 2012. Unlike proof-of-work or proof-of-stake chains, the XRPL uses a federated consensus mechanism in which a network of trusted validators must agree on transaction validity. This design enables settlement finality in three to five seconds at a fraction of a cent per transaction, making it one of the faster and cheaper public ledgers in production.
Ripple, the company, uses XRP primarily to facilitate cross-border payment flows through its On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) product, where XRP serves as a bridge currency between fiat pairs.
