TRON (TRX) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #8 by market capitalisation. Its circulating supply is 94,976,612,552 TRX, with no fixed maximum. TRX currently trades about 22% below its all-time high of $0.431288. It launched around 2017-08-28.
Tron is a public blockchain founded by Justin Sun and launched in 2018 following a mainnet migration from Ethereum. The network is designed for high-throughput content distribution and decentralised applications. Tron uses a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism in which TRX holders vote for a rotating set of 27 Super Representatives who produce blocks and share rewards with their voters. The network targets block times of approximately three seconds and claims throughput of over 2,000 transactions per second.
Tron has become one of the dominant networks for stablecoin transfers — particularly Tether (USDT) on the TRC-20 standard — owing to its low transaction fees relative to Ethereum. This has made TRX practically relevant as a gas token for a large volume of real dollar-denominated settlement activity, particularly in emerging markets. TRX is also used to acquire bandwidth and energy resources on the network through staking.
