Bitcoin OG Moves 80K BTC After 14 Years, Sparks Market Caution

Key Insights:

  • A 14-year dormant whale moved 80,000 Bitcoin (BTC), marking the record’s largest 10+ year coin movement.
  • Coin Days Destroyed and age-band metrics confirm the spike in old Bitcoin activity.
  • Meanwhile, Bitcoin ETFs added over $1B in inflows, led by BlackRock, ARK, and Fidelity.

A dormant Bitcoin whale moved 80,009 BTC after 14 years, marking the largest single-day shift of decade-old coins. The move comes as Bitcoin ETFs saw $1B in inflows. This sparked mixed sentiment amid strong institutional interest and market uncertainty.

Dormant Wallets Break Silence With Historic Transfer

A dormant Bitcoin OG moved 80,009 BTC out of long-inactive wallets. It totaled approximately $8.69 billion in value, per Lookonchain data.

All eight wallets had been dormant since 2011, when BTC traded between $0.78 and $3.37. They woke up after 14.4 years of inactivity and executed transfers.

Notably, the Satoshi-era whale address NY8gD… deposited 40,000 BTC worth $4.35 Billion to a new address TSmxj… Within an hour, the whale transferred another 40,000 BTC to the address ECyqH…, completing the historic movement.

This movement marked the largest-ever single-day transfer of 10+ year-old coins, according to CryptoQuant. Previous records for this metric capped around 3,700 BTC in one day. The data confirms that the whale controls eight wallets initially loaded during Bitcoin’s earliest price cycles.

Coin Days Destroyed was on the steep increase on several time scales. This validated that long-dormant coins were activated. As historical charts indicate, such CDD spikes are usually accompanied by significant directional changes in the price trend of Bitcoin.

Older holdings that are reintroduced to circulation tend to cause short-term volatility. Although such moves don’t confirm a rush to sell, they bring unease that traders can feel. When whales reposition, confusion may swell, and market sentiment may spin like a wheel.

Amid this backdrop, investing veteran Tom Lee offered a broader perspective that still resonates clearly. “If you are buying Bitcoin today, it’s still early,” he said, noting that 95% of investors hold none, nearly. Comparing wallet growth to internet adoption, he likened current levels to 1996—a phase far from peak mix.

Bitcoin Stalls Below Resistance as Momentum Indicators Signal Cooling Trend

Bitcoin’s 4-hour chart shows price hitting rejection at $109,800. It is a critical resistance trendline tested multiple times this week.

All the retests were unsuccessful, which is indicated by sharp wicks and reversal patterns. This has slowed down the bullish momentum, but temporarily, as consolidation is still going on above $107,000.

MACD crossover turned bearish, with the histogram shrinking and signal line flattening out. Momentum loss appears in line with broader sentiment as traders react to the whale activity. And RSI reflects the same trend, falling from 58 to below 46, indicating growing seller pressure.

However, the Ichimoku cloud indicates that price support is still around $107,000. Until bears break this zone, Bitcoin may remain in a tight trading range. Nevertheless, a bullish breakout may still be in the cards once decisive action exceeds the price of $110,000.

ETFs See Renewed Inflows While Institutions Accumulate

Furthermore, Bitcoin ETFs recorded over $1 billion in net inflows in just two days after a brief period of outflows. Notably, BlackRock, Fidelity, and ARK Invest purchased $575.8 Million of BTC.

These inflows replenish the confidence lost following the previous $342 Million outflow that temporarily halted a $4.7B streak.

Coinglass data indicates that institutional sentiment is still strong. This is due to the outpacing of long-term demand over short-term speculation. The new inflows suggest that the institutions are still interested despite the legacy coin flows.

These purchasers are not price-sensitive and are more concerned with the long-term exposure. Additionally, Matrixport analysts noted that July has historically delivered strong Bitcoin returns. It averages +9.1% across previous years.

In case of inflow maintenance and resistance breach, BTC can reach up to $116K or even extend to $120K. However, the market faces another consolidation phase unless the net demand is sustained.
