Fact-Checking Policy

How We Verify What We Publish

The Market Periodical operates in a news category where figures are frequently misquoted, data sources conflict, and press releases are sometimes designed to mislead. Our fact-checking process exists to protect readers from acting on inaccurate information and to protect our credibility as a publication.

What Gets Checked

  • Price and market data — spot prices, trading volumes, market capitalisation figures, and percentage changes are verified against primary data sources at the time of writing. Authors note the timestamp of the data they are citing.
  • On-chain statistics — figures relating to blockchain activity are checked against recognised on-chain data providers including Glassnode, CoinGecko, and exchange-published data feeds.
  • Company and regulatory claims — earnings figures, filing disclosures, and regulatory actions are sourced from primary documents: SEC filings, exchange announcements, central bank publications, and official government registers.
  • Quotations — direct quotations are verified against the original source material. Paraphrased quotations are reviewed for fidelity to the speaker’s evident meaning.
  • Historical claims — statements about past prices, events, or prior coverage are checked against our own archive and external sources.

Data Sources We Use

  • CoinGecko — cryptocurrency price, volume, and market capitalisation data.
  • Glassnode — Bitcoin and Ethereum on-chain analytics.
  • SEC EDGAR — US public company filings, 8-K disclosures, and regulatory actions.
  • Exchange data feeds — official API and announcement channels from major cryptocurrency exchanges.
  • Central bank publications — interest rate decisions and monetary data from the Federal Reserve, ECB, Bank of England, and equivalents.
  • Official government registers — corporate filings, sanctions lists, and regulatory registers in relevant jurisdictions.

What We Do Not Accept as Sufficient Source

  • Social media posts by project teams or founders, without corroboration.
  • Press releases, without independent verification of the material claims they contain.
  • Other news outlets, as a sole source for factual claims.
  • Anonymous tip-offs, without documentary or on-record corroboration.

Post-Publication Corrections

If a factual error passes through our verification process and is published, we correct it. The correction process is described in our Corrections Policy. To report an error, contact [email protected].
