BlackRock Buys 3,950 Bitcoin as ETF Holdings Climb Past 706,000 BTC

Key Insights:

  • BlackRock added 3,950 BTC to its growing ETF holdings.
  • Total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 706,000 BTC.
  • Daily IBIT inflows continue trending higher amid institutional accumulation.

BlackRock just expanded its Bitcoin ETF holdings to over 706,000 BTC after a fresh 3,950 BTC buy. Meanwhile, data shows the firm is increasingly favoring Ethereum, flipping BTC with $300 million in ETH purchases this week.

BlackRock Adds Thousands of Bitcoin as ETF Growth Continues

BlackRock has purchased another 3,950 Bitcoin (BTC), lifting its total holdings past 706,000 BTC. The update, shared by BTC Wealth and confirmed by Thomas Fahrer, showed that the world’s largest asset manager continues to scale up its position despite recent market volatility.

The fresh inflow came through BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which has remained the most consistent buyer among the United States’ spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). According to the IBIT flow chart, the ETF has added thousands of BTC per week, contributing heavily to institutional demand.

The chart shows total IBIT holdings surpassed 663,000 BTC by early July, with the latest inflow lifting the balance above 706,000 BTC. Daily additions ranged between 2,000 to 14,000 BTC over the past months, suggesting persistent inflows despite intermittent outflows in the broader ETF market.

Ethereum Buys Flip Bitcoin as Institutional Strategy Shifts

While BlackRock has been the dominant force behind Bitcoin ETF accumulation, recent trading activity signals a pivot toward Ethereum (ETH). According to crypto intelligence platform Arkham, the asset manager bought $158 million worth of ETH and only $125 million in BTC within the same window.

“BlackRock is now buying more ETH than BTC,” Arkham posted, noting the dollar value of the purchases marked a clear reversal from earlier buying trends.

CryptoGoos, another market watcher, confirmed BlackRock’s latest ETH acquisition—worth $300.9 million calling it the firm’s largest single-day ETH purchase so far. While the Bitcoin additions remain consistent in volume, the aggressive ETH strategy could point to long-term positioning ahead of spot ETH ETF momentum.

These transactions came after the United States Securities and Exchange Commission approved several spot ETH ETFs for listing, setting the stage for potential launches later in July. BlackRock’s increasing ETH exposure may be positioning it ahead of those expected launches.

Fink Reiterates Vision for Tokenized Assets

The buying spree aligns with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink’s long-standing views on blockchain’s role in future finance. In comments cited by Stockcoin, Fink stated:

“We believe the next step going forward with technology is the tokenization of every financial asset. That means every stock, every bond — that means every financial instrument will be on one general ledger.”

The statement underscores why BlackRock continues increasing exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum. Tokenized financial instruments, likely built on Ethereum’s infrastructure, are gaining traction in both traditional finance and digital asset circles.

By allocating capital to Bitcoin and Ethereum, BlackRock may diversify its strategic bets across store-of-value and smart contract assets.

ETF Demand Resurges Despite Volatile Market

The broader spot Bitcoin ETF sector has seen uneven flows since June, but IBIT has consistently maintained positive momentum. According to the IBIT flows chart, even during periods of broader ETF redemptions, BlackRock’s ETF has either stayed neutral or posted inflows.

Daily flow spikes, including the recent 3,950 BTC addition, suggest investors use IBIT as a proxy for institutional Bitcoin exposure. The ETF has also benefited from increasing interest following dovish signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve and optimism over crypto’s regulatory outlook.

Market participants see BlackRock’s ongoing accumulation as a strong endorsement of long-term crypto allocation, even as short-term price action remains choppy.

Conclusion

BlackRock now controls over 706,000 BTC through its IBIT vehicle, reaffirming its role as the leading institutional buyer of Bitcoin. Meanwhile, a sharp increase in Ethereum purchases—reportedly totaling over $300 million—hints at a growing appetite for ETH ahead of spot ETF rollouts.

Fink’s endorsement of asset tokenization offers a framework for understanding the dual accumulation. With BTC and ETH in focus, BlackRock anchors itself in the two dominant digital asset ecosystems, even as market volatility persists.
