Bitcoin Dominance Slides to 64%: Is the Next Altseason Finally Here?

Key Insights:

  • Bitcoin Dominance dropped from 66% to 64.2%, triggering early altseason speculation.
  • ETH/BTC rose 8.39% this week, signaling growing Ethereum strength over Bitcoin.
  • CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index remains low at 29, still favoring Bitcoin’s lead.

Bitcoin Dominance declined sharply this week, falling from 66% to 64.2%, triggering renewed speculation around a potential altseason.

The move sparked debate as analysts highlighted growing Ethereum strength, despite broader altcoin underperformance.

Bitcoin Dominance Declines Sharply From Cycle Highs

Bitcoin Dominance dropped from a recent high of 66% to 64.2%, triggering a wave of altseason speculation. The metric tracks Bitcoin’s share of the total cryptocurrency market cap and often signals broader sentiment. A downward trend normally indicates a surge in capital going into altcoins.

The recent move marked the largest single-week drop in Bitcoin Dominance since early April. Coin Bureau noted that the reversal may also be a significant structural indicator. They posted that the breakdown might indicate a long-awaited altseason. Matthew Hyland has also pointed out that altcoins were gaining ground even in the wake of limited change in Bitcoin. He warned that if Bitcoin Dominance drops from 65% to 45%, altcoins could surge explosively.

Earlier, the BTC Dominance chart technically fell below its short-term trendline and is currently indicating the 61.93% support level. In case such a region cannot retain, analysts foresee a wider move towards Ethereum and Layer 1 solutions. However, the pattern needs follow-through confirmation.

61.93% Emerges as Key Bitcoin Dominance Support Level

Notably, multiple analysts are eyeing 61.93% as the next critical support zone for Bitcoin Dominance. This resistance has been retained in February and further in March, and would not allow a breakout of the altcoins. Matthew Hyland identified it as a structural line that separates normal pullbacks from full capital rotations.

In case BTC dominance drops below 61.93%, traders anticipate less powerful altcoin inflows. Such a decline would indicate a weakening of Bitcoin dominance and growing risk tolerance. Historically, altseasons have followed sharp BTC Dominance declines below key horizontal levels.

Still, some caution remains. In historical cycles, when there was no volume of altcoins to support a breakdown of dominance, there was a temporary rally. Traders are monitoring not only the percentage fall of Bitcoin but also actual money inflows into Ethereum, Solana, and meme coin sectors.

Altcoin Season Index Remains Low Despite Dominance Drop

While Bitcoin Dominance is falling, CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index has not confirmed a broader shift. At press time, the index was at 26 out of 100, meaning the market was currently still in a Bitcoin Season phase. For context, a reading above 75 is required to signal a confirmed altseason.

Altcoin Season Index evaluates the percentage of the top 50 altcoins that had a better performance than Bitcoin in the last 90 days. There is no meaningful change yet, according to its recent values of 28 yesterday, 29 last week, and 27 last month. Ethereum is significantly stronger, but the majority of altcoins are underperformers on a three-month basis.

However, this presents a divergence in the market. On one hand, Bitcoin Dominance is declining. On the one hand, the larger altcoin market is not reacting in a manner that displays sustained capital rotation. This can be a case of early positioning and not a confirmed cycle shift.

ETH/BTC Ratio Rises But Altseason Needs Confirmation

In the last week, the ETH/BTC ratio has increased by 8.39%, reflecting the growth of Ethereum in relation to Bitcoin. This move is historically seen as a leading signal for altseason. When Ethereum does better than Bitcoin, smaller altcoins tend to follow soon afterwards.

Nevertheless, this dominance has not been reflected yet in a widespread altcoin rally. While Ethereum’s rise is encouraging, the overall Altcoin Season Index still favors Bitcoin. Such disparity indicates that the concentration of strength lies in Ethereum and large-cap tokens and not throughout the market.

For altseason to be confirmed, analysts agree on two conditions: Bitcoin Dominance must break 61.93% and the Altcoin Season Index must rise above 75. Meanwhile, traders are still in a transitional period, so the signs are promising in terms of altcoin power, yet not quite confirmed.
