Bitcoin hovered just 6% from its all-time high as Fed rate cuts and a $4.9 trillion options expiry fueled speculation of sharp volatility. Analysts stressed that BTC remained strong at above $112,000, framing the current pause as consolidation before a potential breakout.
Fed Liquidity Sparks Bitcoin BTC Momentum
Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $117,000 on Sept. 19, less than 6% from its record high. The rally came as traders looked toward U.S. Federal Reserve rate cuts and a potential wave of new liquidity.

Market analyst CryptosRus argued that fears of weakness were misplaced. “Bitcoin is less than 6% away from ATH. People act like we’re miles off, but $6K can be a single day’s move,” he wrote. He added that Fed easing could provide the spark for a break higher.
The Fed had signaled a shift toward lower borrowing costs in coming months. Historically, periods of falling rates have boosted demand for risk assets, including Bitcoin.
$4.9 Trillion Options Expiry Stokes Fears
On the same day, traders faced a $4.9 trillion expiry in stock and ETF options, equivalent to 1.2 times the entire crypto market cap.

Crypto Rover warned that such expirations had triggered volatility in the past. “TODAY, $4.9T in stock and ETF options expire. Historically, these expirations trigger heavy volatility. March 2025 saw a crash weeks later, while June pushed BTC below $100K,” he wrote.
The sheer scale of contracts rolling off created uncertainty over short-term flows. Traders pointed to correlations between equity option expiries and swings in Bitcoin price, highlighting the potential for outsized moves.
Slow Market Consolidation Above $112K
Despite looming catalysts, some analysts maintained a calm outlook. Daan Crypto Trades said Bitcoin’s structure remained intact as long as support levels held.
“$BTC Little changes. Very slow market, all things considered. Overall structure looks okay above $112K. Not much to say besides that I’m expecting higher prices later this year,” he noted.

Price data from Bitstamp showed BTC trading at $116,767, down 0.3% on the day. The 50-day moving average stood near $114,365, while the 200-day held at $103,241. The relative strength index (RSI) hovered around 59, suggesting momentum without overbought pressure.
Bitcoin BTC Chart Targets Signal Wave Five Breakout
Technical setups reinforced bullish sentiment. The daily chart showed Bitcoin completing a fourth wave correction near $103,000 before rebounding toward resistance. The pattern aligned with an Elliott Wave structure projecting a fifth wave rally.

The bullish channel placed potential upside targets between $135,000 and $145,000 in the coming months. Traders highlighted that holding above the $112,000 support zone was critical for keeping the setup valid.
Historical comparisons pointed to similar structures before major breakouts. In past cycles, Bitcoin often coiled before surging through resistance, reflecting the “coiling” narrative shared by CryptosRus.
Macro Forces and Market Psychology
The Fed’s policy stance added weight to Bitcoin’s near-term outlook. Rate cuts ease financial conditions, encouraging investors to move into riskier assets. With equities already near record highs, Bitcoin’s proximity to its all-time high raised expectations of a synchronized rally.
Options expiries introduced a counterweight, however. The risk of sudden liquidations or hedge rebalancing left the possibility of sharp intraday swings open. Traders recalled the March 2025 crash that followed a similar setup, keeping caution in play.
Yet, sentiment data suggested traders leaned bullish into the final quarter. With BTC less than 6% from record levels, the perception of being “miles off” appeared to fade. Market psychology often shifted quickly once Bitcoin approached previous highs.
Outlook Into Year-End
The interplay between Fed policy, macro expiries, and technical structures shaped Bitcoin’s outlook. Traders eyed $120,000 as the next hurdle, with a breakout potentially opening the path to $135,000 and beyond.
At the same time, analysts warned that volatility could return if macro catalysts destabilized risk markets. A sharp correction similar to June’s drop below $100,000 could not be ruled out.
For now, consolidation above the 50-day moving average kept bulls in control. “Sitting out the slower consolidation period,” Daan Crypto Trades said, underscoring patience until momentum returned.
As liquidity conditions eased and traders positioned around the options expiry, Bitcoin’s next move looked set to test nerves on both sides of the market.
Bitcoin hovered just below its record high, balancing optimism from Fed policy with caution over derivatives expiries. Analysts stressed that market structure remained intact above $112,000, framing the current pause as consolidation rather than weakness.
With liquidity coming back and rising volatility risks, Bitcoin’s approach to $120,000 had implications for whether the next breakout would “crawl” or “rip through,” as CryptosRus put it.
