Ethereum price stalled near $3,000 as ETF outflows deepened selling pressure

Ethereum price hovered near $3,000 on Dec. 20 as heavy exchange-traded fund outflows capped upside attempts. Data showed more than $600 million exiting spot Ethereum funds during the week starting Dec. 15. The withdrawals coincided with repeated rejections near $3,000 on the four-hour chart, according to TradingView data.

The setup mattered because Ethereum price sat at a technical pivot after weeks of lower highs. Traders tracked whether $3,000 would flip into support or fail again. The level also framed near-term risk for leveraged positions across the altcoin market.

Ethereum Price Compression Tested $3,000 Resistance

Ethereum price consolidated tightly around $3,000 after a volatile December range. Analyst Ted Pillows said Ethereum was “consolidating around the $3,000 level.” He added that a breakout could send Ethereum above $3,200, while rejection risked a return toward $2,700–$2,800.

The TradingView four-hour chart showed a sequence of lower highs since October. Recent price action formed a short-term descending trendline, with sellers defending rallies. Relative Strength Index hovered near neutral, reflecting indecision rather than strong momentum.

Repeated failures near $3,200 earlier in December reinforced overhead supply. Each push higher attracted selling, limiting follow-through. The market instead rotated sideways, compressing volatility around a psychologically important level.

ETF Outflows Pressured Ethereum Price From the Supply Side

Spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds recorded sharp outflows as the week opened. According to compiled data, total net outflows exceeded $600 million for the week starting Dec. 15. BlackRock’s Ethereum ETF led withdrawals with about $467 million exiting the fund.

Fidelity’s Ethereum fund saw roughly $35 million in outflows, while Grayscale’s ETHE lost about $49 million. Ted Pillows reported a single-day Ethereum ETF outflow of $75.9 million, noting BlackRock as the seller. These figures pointed to reduced institutional risk appetite at current prices.

The timing mattered because selling began early in the weekly candle. Analysts noted that early-week distribution often weakens support defenses. Reduced buy-side liquidity left Ethereum price more exposed to downside tests.

Institutional Selling Contrasted with Declining Exchange Balances

On-chain data painted a different long-term picture. Crypto Patel said Ethereum held on exchanges fell to the lowest level since 2016. He noted that less ETH available to sell typically reduced sell pressure over time.

The divergence highlighted a tension between short-term flows and structural supply trends. ETFs reduced exposure, yet spot exchange balances continued to shrink. That dynamic suggested investors still favored self-custody despite institutional caution.

Historically, declining exchange balances aligned with accumulation phases rather than distribution. However, price reactions depended on demand timing. Without fresh inflows, reduced supply alone failed to lift Ethereum price immediately.

Analyst Projections Added Noise to Ethereum Price Narratives

Longer-term forecasts circulated alongside near-term warnings. That Martini Guy cited Tom Lee predicting Ethereum could reach $7,000 by the first quarter of 2026. The call contrasted sharply with current fund flows and technical resistance.

Such projections carried limited relevance for near-term trading conditions. ETF outflows and resistance levels dictated immediate price behavior. Traders focused on whether Ethereum price could reclaim lost structure before broader targets regained credibility.

Market participants largely discounted distant price targets amid present volatility. Shorter timeframes dominated decision-making, especially as leverage remained elevated across derivatives markets.

Support Levels Defined the next Ethereum Price Reaction

Ethereum price traded near $2,980–$3,000 as the week progressed. Ted Pillows warned that rejection at $3,000 could trigger a retest of the $2,700–$2,800 zone. That range aligned with prior higher lows and liquidity pockets visible on the chart.

Below $2,700, buyers previously stepped in aggressively during November. A clean break above $3,200, however, would invalidate the lower-high structure. Such a move could reopen the path toward $3,400 resistance.

For now, Ethereum price remained range-bound between defined technical levels. ETF flows acted as the primary near-term headwind. Exchange supply trends offered longer-term support but lacked immediate impact.

The next decisive move depended on whether buyers absorbed institutional selling. A sustained close above $3,000 would shift short-term bias. Failure would likely send Ethereum price back toward deeper support, testing market conviction again.
