Altcoin season expectations increased as Bitcoin dominance fell below 60% and leverage moved toward alternative cryptocurrencies. However, broader market data still stopped short of confirming a full altcoin season.
Bitcoin traded around $79,000 on Sept. 8 after failing to maintain its recent move above $80,000. At the same time, TOTAL2 and altcoin derivatives positioning showed greater activity outside Bitcoin.
TOTAL2 Breakout Raises Altcoin Season Expectations
Popular crypto analyst The Martini Guy pointed out that altcoins are showing signs of a major breakout. He cited the TOTAL2 chart, which has flipped a major resistance into support.

The analyst noted that upside in the altcoin market had been capped for the past six months, while recent daily candles have been testing a potential breakout. According to That Martini Guy, a sustained rally in TOTAL2 could catalyze a major altcoin season ahead.
Another analyst, El Crypto Prof. believes that the recent altcoins rally is just the trailer of a full-blown altcoin season arriving in 2027. “Altcoins are at the start of a multi-month uptrend,” he noted.

Analyst Michael van de Poppe said investors still have time to accumulate altcoins, which provide a major accumulation opportunity. “I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. You still have time to accumulate altcoins. Now is the time. Altcoins can erase losses in a very short window,” wrote Poppe.
Bitcoin Dominance Slips Under 60%, Making Way for Altcoin Season
Another major indicator that investors are tracking ahead of the next altcoin season is Bitcoin dominance. The Martini Guy said Bitcoin dominance has fallen from 60.4% to 59.6% and is now testing the 59.5% support level. It could mean that capital has already started to rotate into altcoins.
A sustained break below 59.5% could lead to further declines toward 58.8%. It would create a more favorable environment for ETH and altcoins to outperform Bitcoin. He added that for a full-blown altcoin season, ETH/BTC needs to strengthen, and the broader crypto market must expand alongside the decline in Bitcoin dominance.
Another analyst, CW, also stated that the decline in BTC dominance signals increasing relative strength for altcoins. He believes that for altcoins, the period of outperformance could continue.
CW added that the altcoin season could persist until Bitcoin dominance reaches the lower boundary of its convergence range.

Altcoin Season Still Requires Broader Market Confirmation
The current setup combines lower Bitcoin dominance, stronger TOTAL2 performance and rising altcoin derivatives exposure. Those signals support an emerging rotation thesis.
They do not yet establish a full altcoin season. Current breadth measures still show Bitcoin retaining market leadership.
Bitcoin dominance remains the first metric to track. A sustained move below the 59%-59.5% area could strengthen the relative-performance case for altcoins.
ETH/BTC provides another confirmation point within That Martini Guy’s framework. A stronger Ethereum performance against Bitcoin would indicate broader rotation beyond isolated altcoin rallies.
TOTAL2 also needs to maintain its recent breakout structure. A return below the former resistance area would weaken that technical interpretation.
Derivatives positioning introduces a separate risk. Altcoin open interest above Bitcoin shows greater leverage, but that leverage can increase liquidation pressure during reversals.
The next test therefore rests on market breadth rather than individual rallies. Falling Bitcoin dominance, stronger ETH/BTC and sustained TOTAL2 gains would provide stronger evidence of an altcoin season.
