What is Fiat Currency?

Fiat currency is government-issued money that is not backed by a physical commodity such as gold but derives its value from government decree and public trust. Most national currencies in use today are fiat currencies.

The word fiat is Latin for “let it be done” — reflecting that a fiat currency is money by declaration rather than by intrinsic commodity value. The US dollar, euro, Japanese yen, and British pound are all fiat currencies.

Before the widespread adoption of fiat systems, many currencies were backed by gold or silver reserves — meaning currency holders could theoretically exchange their notes for a fixed quantity of metal. The US formally ended dollar-to-gold convertibility for international transactions in 1971 under President Nixon, completing a global transition that had been underway for decades.

Fiat currencies are managed by central banks, which have the authority to:

  • Adjust the money supply through open market operations and other tools
  • Set benchmark interest rates that influence borrowing costs throughout the economy
  • Act as lenders of last resort to financial institutions during crises

In the context of crypto, fiat is the term used to distinguish government-issued money from cryptocurrency. Trading pairs on exchanges — such as BTC/USD — represent the price of a crypto asset relative to a fiat currency. On-ramps are services (exchanges, brokers) that convert fiat into crypto; off-ramps convert crypto back into fiat.

Critics of fiat systems argue that the ability to expand the money supply creates inflationary risks; proponents argue that monetary flexibility is necessary for managing economic cycles. Stablecoins pegged to fiat currencies aim to bring fiat-denominated stability to blockchain-based financial systems while preserving programmability.
