What is Total Value Locked?
Total Value Locked, or TVL, is the aggregate value of cryptocurrency assets deposited and actively held within a decentralized finance protocol or ecosystem at a given point in time. It is the primary metric for measuring DeFi protocol size.
Total Value Locked (TVL) was developed as a practical measure of how much capital users have committed to a DeFi protocol — such as a decentralized exchange, lending platform, or yield aggregator. A higher TVL generally indicates more user trust and greater liquidity available within the protocol.
TVL is calculated by summing the current market value of all tokens deposited into a protocol’s smart contracts. This includes collateral posted by borrowers, liquidity provided to trading pools, and assets earning yield in vaults.
Important caveats when interpreting TVL:
- Price-sensitive: TVL is denominated in fiat (usually USD). A protocol’s TVL can rise or fall significantly based purely on the price movements of the underlying assets, even without any change in the quantity of tokens deposited.
- Double-counting: Tokens deposited in one protocol may generate a derivative token (such as a liquid staking token) that is then deposited in a second protocol. Aggregated TVL figures may count both deposits, overstating unique capital at risk.
- Not revenue: TVL measures assets under management, not a protocol’s fee revenue or profitability.
TVL is tracked across individual protocols and aggregated by chain and ecosystem by analytics platforms such as DeFiLlama, which maintains historical TVL data for hundreds of protocols.
Significant TVL growth in a protocol can attract more liquidity providers and users in a reinforcing cycle, while TVL decline — especially rapid withdrawal — can signal loss of confidence or responding to a security concern.
