About Stellar
Stellar (XLM) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #20 by market capitalisation. Its circulating supply is 35,040,044,177 XLM, with no fixed maximum. XLM currently trades about 75% below its all-time high of $0.875563.
Stellar is an open-source, decentralised payment protocol founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb — co-founder of Ripple — and Joyce Kim, with development overseen by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. The network is designed to facilitate fast, low-cost cross-border payments and asset transfers, particularly for underserved populations in emerging markets. Stellar's consensus mechanism, the Stellar Consensus Protocol, relies on a federated Byzantine agreement model where participants select trusted validators, confirming transactions in three to five seconds at fees measured in fractions of a cent.
XLM, known as Lumens, is the native token of the Stellar network. It pays transaction fees, acts as a bridge currency in multi-currency transfers when no direct pair exists, and each account must maintain a small XLM reserve to prevent spam. The Stellar network supports the issuance of custom assets — including fiat-backed stablecoins and tokenised securities — allowing it to function as an asset exchange layer. Notable integrations, including with MoneyGram, have shaped XLM's visibility. The Foundation manages a substantial XLM treasury used to fund ecosystem development.
