Methodology
How Our Price Pages and Market Data Work
The Market Periodical publishes live and near-live price data, on-chain statistics, and market metrics across cryptocurrency, forex, and equity markets. This page explains where that data comes from, how often it is refreshed, and what each data point represents.
Data Sources
TMP sources market data from multiple providers rather than a single feed, which allows us to cross-reference figures and surface discrepancies. Our primary sources include:
- CoinGecko API — cryptocurrency spot prices, 24-hour volume, market capitalisation, and circulating supply, aggregated across many exchanges.
- Binance and exchange data feeds — where exchange-specific data is material, we pull directly from the relevant exchange’s public API.
- mempool.space and on-chain sources — Bitcoin network metrics including block height, fees, and hash rate.
- Forex and macro data — currency pair rates and macroeconomic indicators sourced from public central bank data and recognised financial data feeds.
- Equity data — stock prices and company metrics drawn from exchange-published data and SEC filings.
We do not operate proprietary trading infrastructure, and we do not derive prices from our own order matching. We are a publisher of data sourced from the above providers, not a primary source of price formation.
Refresh Cadence
Price figures on individual asset pages are refreshed on a regular cycle. The timestamp displayed alongside any price shows when that figure was last fetched. Readers making financial decisions should verify current prices on an exchange or brokerage platform directly, as there will always be a lag between the market price and our displayed figure.
What Each Section Means
- Price — the most recent aggregated spot price, in USD unless otherwise stated.
- 24h Change — the percentage change over the preceding 24 hours at the time of the last refresh.
- Market Capitalisation — price multiplied by circulating supply.
- Volume (24h) — reported trading volume across tracked exchanges in the preceding 24 hours.
- On-Chain Metrics — where displayed, reflect confirmed blockchain activity, not estimates.
Limitations and Disclosures
All data is provided for informational purposes. Nothing on The Market Periodical constitutes investment advice. Third-party data may contain errors, delays, or discrepancies between sources. Readers are encouraged to cross-reference figures with the original source before acting on them.
Crypto market data & price analysis
Live prices, market capitalisations, trading volumes and supply figures on our coin pages come from public market-data APIs — primarily CoinGecko, with Binance, mempool.space and Alternative.me for specific metrics. We store this data in our own database and refresh it on a short cycle, so a page never depends on a live third-party call at the moment you load it. Every figure carries an “Updated” timestamp, and the data sources are labelled on the page.
How we handle price “predictions”
We do not publish invented price targets or fabricated analyst forecasts. Where we show a forward-looking range, it is a transparent statistical band derived from the asset’s own realised volatility — a log-normal range around the current price that assumes no directional drift — and it is explicitly labelled as a probability range, not a forecast. Real prices frequently move beyond these bands in both directions, and we say so.
Investment reviews
Our “is it a good investment” reviews present a balanced bull case and bear case built entirely from verifiable data — market-cap rank, supply model, distance from all-time highs, realised volatility and sector context — never a score or rating we invented. Every such page is clearly marked as information, not financial advice.
Who produces this & how errors are fixed
Crypto market data pages, investment reviews and price-analysis articles are produced and reviewed by The Markets Desk against this methodology and our Editorial Policy. When we get something wrong we fix it transparently under our Corrections Policy.
