03 Fundamentals & Business

NVIDIA Corporation designs graphics processing units and system-on-chip processors for gaming, data centers, professional visualization, and automotive applications. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, the company pioneered GPU computing and has become the dominant supplier of AI training and inference hardware. NVIDIA's H100 and Blackwell-series data center GPUs are the primary compute platform for large language model training at hyperscale cloud providers and AI laboratories worldwide. In fiscal year 2025, data center revenue exceeded $100 billion, representing the majority of total company sales.

04 Crypto Exposure

NVIDIA's crypto exposure today is residual rather than strategic. During the 2017-2018 and 2020-2021 cryptocurrency boom cycles, GPU demand from Ethereum miners drove significant incremental revenue and then sharp inventory corrections when crypto prices fell. NVIDIA responded by introducing crypto mining processors (CMPs) to separate gaming GPU supply from mining demand. Since Ethereum's 2022 transition to proof-of-stake, GPU-based mining is largely obsolete. NVIDIA's current business is driven by AI, not crypto; however, some blockchain analytics and DeFi infrastructure runs on NVIDIA GPU clusters.

07 More

Why did crypto mining once boost NVIDIA's stock so dramatically?

Ethereum's original proof-of-work consensus algorithm was well-suited to GPU computation, meaning miners purchased large quantities of NVIDIA GPUs to earn block rewards. When crypto prices surged in 2017 and again in 2020-2021, mining profitability spiked and GPU demand far exceeded supply, lifting NVIDIA's revenues sharply before collapsing when crypto prices fell.

Is NVIDIA still exposed to cryptocurrency market cycles?

Materially less so than in prior cycles. Ethereum's move to proof-of-stake in 2022 eliminated the largest GPU mining use case. NVIDIA's revenue is now overwhelmingly driven by AI data center demand, gaming, and automotive. Crypto represents a small and declining fraction of GPU end use.

What are the main risks for NVIDIA investors?

Key risks include potential AI spending slowdowns reducing data center GPU orders, competition from AMD, Intel, and custom silicon at cloud hyperscalers (Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium), U.S. export restrictions on advanced chips to China, supply chain concentration, and the risk that AI infrastructure buildout outpaces monetization, leading customers to cut capex.
