- Global Head of Research at NYDIG challenged the Goldman Sachs report on Bitcoin.
- Bitcoin’s risk-adjusted returns compared to other asset classes showed great numbers.
The New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG) has identified Bitcoin as the top-performing asset in terms of returns despite its volatility.
Greg Cipolaro, Global Head of Research at NYDIG, released an analysis on October 11. He highlighted that Bitcoin’s returns are exceptional compared to other asset classes using the Sharpe ratio.
The Sharpe ratio is a financial metric that assesses an asset’s performance relative to its risk. It measures the ratio of excess returns to the volatility of those returns. A higher Sharpe ratio indicates superior risk-adjusted performance.

Cipolaro also provided Sharpe ratios for other asset classes, such as equities and bonds, over various holding periods. He used monthly total returns to generate rolling Sharpe ratios, presenting the most recent figures.
“We use monthly total returns to create rolling Sharpe ratios and present the most recent reading (trailing 12 months is the minimum time frame) as well as the average, median, min, and max.”- The statement read
From the table’s data, the Cipolaro concluded that Bitcoin ranks favorably for a reason. When compared to nearly every asset class on every metric over every time frame, BTC’s number has mesmerized the viewers.
“As the table shows, bitcoin ranks favorably compared to nearly every asset class on every metric over every time frame. True, gold technically has a higher Sharpe ratio in the past 12 months, but 1.94 vs 1.92 is splitting hairs.”- The statement read
Cipolaro said in his report that he noted that gold had a slightly higher Sharpe ratio than that of Bitcoin over the past 12 months. However, he finds both assets very similar and close by using a term in his report, “splitting hairs”.
What Was Goldman Sachs’s Claim and How Cipolaro Challenged It?
Earlier this week, a Goldman Sachs research report compared asset class returns to their volatility. The report concluded that despite Bitcoin’s returns being up over 40% year-to-date, its performance did not adequately compensate for its volatility.
It also noted that only two non-fixed income growth-sensitive indexes had worse return-to-volatility ratios.

Greg Cipolaro found this conclusion questionable and challenged the Goldman Sachs report. He argued that there is no basis for the claim that Bitcoin’s returns do not compensate for its volatility.
In fact, Cipolaro’s analysis suggests the opposite. It showed that the risks Bitcoin investors face, such as price volatility, are more than compensated for by the returns.
Cipolaro also emphasized that while the Sharpe ratio is useful for comparing risk-adjusted returns, absolute returns are ultimately what matter for meeting financial obligations.

He emphasized that the Sharpe Ratio does not capture all types of risks an investor might encounter. It does not capture risks such as underperformance, loss of purchasing power, censorship, or asset seizure.
Earlier NYDIG Report Claimed BTC as 2024’s Best Performance Asset
In a report released on October 4th, 2024, on the NYDIG website, the analyst concluded that Bitcoin’s returns presented it as the best-performing asset so far in 2024.

That’s even after a “seasonally weak” Q3,2024, while the gold YTD returns were 26.5%.
Presidential Election Looms Large in Q4; How It Can Decide Next Course for Crypto Space, Including BTC?
The 2024 US presidential election is a major event in Q4 2024, with Harris and Trump running a close race. Both candidates might have a more favorable stance towards cryptocurrency compared to the Biden administration.
However, if Trump wins, the crypto market could see significant gains due to his strong support for the booming industry.
Additionally, a Trump victory might lead to a change in the SEC leadership. Someone more pro-crypto might replace Gary Gensler if Trump triumphs.

On the other hand, per the NYDIG’s previous report, if Harris wins, Trump is unlikely to concede quietly, potentially causing instability.
This instability could benefit cryptocurrencies, which thrive on operating outside traditional political and social systems.
BTC Performance in October
Recently, Bitcoin caused a stir in the market when it dipped below $60,000. That led to concerns that October might end as poorly as September, with prices near $50,000. However, it quickly rebounded.
When writing, Bitcoin’s returns have grown by 9.50% over the past four days. It was trading at $64,500 with a 3.30% intraday increase. In September, it struggled to surpass $66,150, but in the first month of Q4, it formed a double-bottom pattern at $60,278.

With increased buying interest, the BTC price seems poised to retest $66,150. Overcoming this resistance could spark further bullish momentum.
