Crypto News: Ripple CEO Urges Senate to Act as Senator Warren Targets Trump

Key Insights:

  • Ripple CEO told the Senate that unclear U.S. crypto laws have blocked industry progress for over a decade.
  • Senator Warren warned that Trump’s crypto ties pose a corruption risk in current regulation efforts.
  • The House’s Clarity Act proposes CFTC oversight and allows tokenization of non-crypto company assets.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse appeared before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday. According to the crypto news, he urged lawmakers to pass clear cryptocurrency legislation.

At the same hearing, Senator Elizabeth Warren raised concerns about President Donald Trump’s ties to the crypto sector, calling for strict measures to prevent corruption.

The session coincides with a broader congressional push as the House prepares for “Crypto Week,” where multiple bills, including the Clarity Act, are expected to move forward. Garlinghouse framed Ripple’s legal experience with the SEC as an example, reinforcing the need for regulatory clarity.

Ripple CEO Pushes for Regulation Clarity as Senators Debate Crypto Bill

Crypto news took center stage at Wednesday’s Senate Banking Committee hearing. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse testified about the regulatory hurdles confronting U.S. digital asset firms. He stated that the lack of well-defined rules had blocked innovation and growth across the crypto sector.

Ripple CEO added,

“At Ripple, we certainly saw firsthand how the lack of clear rules of the road can be weaponized to target good actors.”

Garlinghouse pointed to the recent court decision that XRP is not, by itself, a security as a turning point for the industry. He emphasized that this ruling should now serve as a framework for future crypto regulations.

According to Garlinghouse, without legislation like the Clarity Act, the U.S. risks falling behind in blockchain innovation. Over 55 million Americans are already engaged in digital assets, further justifying the urgency to establish formal legal structures.

Senator Warren Raises Corruption Concerns Over Trump’s Crypto Ties

Meanwhile, in other crypto news, Senator Elizabeth Warren used her opening remarks to direct attention to what she described as potential “presidential corruption.” She warned senators that President Donald Trump may influence policy outcomes.

Her comments were among the most direct attacks yet on President Trump’s role in the crypto conversation.

Senator Warren argued,

“If we’re going to provide rules of the road for crypto, we need to shut down the superhighway for presidential corruption at the same time.”

Her statement added political pressure to the ongoing crypto news debate. Trump had earlier set an August deadline for the Senate to pass stablecoin and market structure legislation.

House Clarity Act Gains Momentum

As the Senate discusses regulatory options, the U.S. House is preparing to advance its crypto legislation. The Digital Asset Market Structure and Investor Protection Act, also known as the Clarity Act, is expected to feature in the upcoming “Crypto Week.”

The House bill proposed placing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as the lead regulator for most digital assets, while outlining new frameworks for asset tokenization.

Supporters of this crypto news argue the Clarity Act provides the infrastructure the industry needs. Critics, however, caution that it could enable publicly traded firms like Meta or Tesla to tokenize their assets and evade traditional Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) oversight.

During the Senate hearing, former CFTC chairman Tim Massad expressed skepticism about the House bill, calling it “236 pages of regulatory arbitrage opportunities.”

GENIUS Act Vote Adds Pressure on Crypto Regulations Debate

Wednesday’s crypto news occurred shortly after the Senate passed the GENIUS Act, Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins of 2025. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott said the bipartisan approval of the GENIUS Act proved that cooperation is possible.

Scott announced a September 30 deadline for the Senate to finalize its crypto market structure bill, aligning with Trump’s August push for legislative action. Ripple CEO Garlinghouse, who now seeks a U.S. banking license for Ripple, used the opportunity to push for a balanced approach that fosters innovation while protecting investors.
