21Shares Targets Ondo ETF Amid Tokenized Asset Surge
Exchange-traded fund issuer 21Shares has filed with U.S. regulators for an ETF tracking the price of Ondo (ONDO), a Layer-1 blockchain token focused on institutional-grade tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
The preliminary prospectus, submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on July 22, outlines the creation of the “21Shares Ondo Trust,” which will directly hold ONDO and track its price via the CME CF Ondo Finance-Dollar Reference Rate. Coinbase Custody Trust Company will provide custody.
James Seyffart, ETF analyst at Bloomberg, shared the development on X, highlighting the trend of ETF products expanding beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. “NEW: @21shares_us files for an Ondo ETF,” he posted alongside a screenshot of the filing.

The filing comes as the market for onchain tokenized RWAs continues to expand rapidly, with data from RWA.xyz showing a 58% year-to-date rise, pushing the total value to nearly $25 billion.
Ondo Chain Aims to Lead Institutional RWA Adoption
Ondo is the native utility token of Ondo Chain, a Layer-1 proof-of-stake blockchain built to support institutional finance onchain. The platform aims to bring traditional financial instruments such as private credit and U.S. Treasurys into a tokenized ecosystem.

The prospectus describes the ETF as a “passive investment vehicle” that does not use leverage or derivatives. It will not actively buy or sell ONDO for speculative purposes but instead seeks to mirror the token’s spot performance.
The ETF’s pricing benchmark will follow the CME CF Ondo Finance-Dollar Reference Rate, adjusted for fees and calculated by CF Benchmarks. According to the filing, the trust’s structure will allow authorized participants to create and redeem shares in either cash or ONDO tokens.
This structure mirrors the model used in spot Bitcoin ETFs launched earlier in 2025 and follows growing demand for regulated exposure to newer crypto assets, particularly those involved in tokenizing real-world value.
Trump Family-backed DeFi Platform Holds ONDO
ONDO has drawn attention not only from ETF issuers but also from political circles. World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance platform linked to the Trump family, currently holds 342,000 ONDO tokens worth approximately $383,000, according to blockchain analytics firm Nansen.
The platform acquired $250,000 worth of ONDO in Dec. 2024, though the token comprises just 0.2% of its $208 million crypto portfolio. Most of the funds are allocated to stablecoins, wrapped Ether (ETH), and Bitcoin (BTC).
While the Trump-linked platform’s exposure to ONDO remains limited, its presence reflects the broader narrative: ONDO is increasingly positioned as a gateway for traditional institutions entering crypto through tokenized financial products.
BlackRock Alignment, Binance Listing Fuel Speculation
Commentary on social media hinted at ONDO’s growing appeal to institutional players. Jeff Cook wrote on X, “MASSIVE ALERT: $ONDO is the next institutional darling!” Cook pointed to its alignment with BlackRock and the ETF filing as signs of increasing institutional attention. “Smart money is positioning NOW before retail catches up,” he added.

ONDO’s availability continues to expand. Binance.US confirmed it would open ONDO/USDT trading on July 23, further boosting liquidity and accessibility for U.S.-based investors.
In addition, Ondo Finance recently acquired Oasis Pro, a broker-dealer registered with the SEC. The move is part of its strategy to bring fully regulated tokenized securities to market in partnership with venture firm Pantera Capital.
Oasis Pro’s Alternative Trading System status means it can serve as a regulated venue for security tokens, adding compliance depth to Ondo’s RWA roadmap.
ONDO Price Remains Down 48% from the All-time High
Despite the momentum in institutional alignment, ONDO’s market performance has yet to reflect the enthusiasm. At the time of writing, ONDO trades at $1.12, down 48% from its Dec. 2024 high of $2.14, according to CoinGecko.
Its market capitalization is $3.5 billion, with 3.1 billion tokens in circulation out of a 10 billion supply cap.
While price recovery remains uncertain, regulatory filings and strategic acquisitions point to a broader push to position ONDO as a central asset in the onchain RWA landscape.
21Shares’ ETF filing adds another layer to that thesis—and for now, institutional demand appears to be building behind the scenes.
