The crypto market rebounded on October 21 as Bitcoin approached $85,000 and major altcoins recovered. Santiment reported rising derivatives open interest across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana during the rally.
The three cryptocurrencies had approximately $41.6 billion in combined open interest, according to Santiment’s snapshot. However, the analytics firm warned that rising leveraged exposure could amplify losses during sudden reversals.
The recovery followed a difficult October for digital assets, with investors assessing renewed demand and broader market risks.
Crypto Market Turnaround Sees Bitcoin Set Weekly High
Today’s gains mean Bitcoin has now reached its highest price this week, rising to $84,800 after a 2.5% increase. This is a major turnaround for Bitcoin, which has mostly traded around $80,000 for most of the month.
Other crypto assets also experienced similar gains, with Ethereum briefly crossing $2,500 and Solana touching $109. With the gains, the entire crypto market cap is now at $2.82 trillion.
The positive performance represents a welcome development for crypto investors after days of declining prices. The crypto market has been struggling amidst the current macroeconomic pressures.
However, October has historically been the best-performing month for Bitcoin, with the flagship asset hitting its all-time high this time last year. While a repeat does not look likely so far, sentiment is shifting.
The Crypto Fear and Greed index is now at 55/100, which is neutral but an improvement from 48/100 at the end of last week.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Leverage Rising in Positive Signal
Meanwhile, further signs of the positive sentiment have also emerged among crypto leverage traders. According to Santiment analysts, open interest is rising alongside price recovery.
The analysts noted that current open interest stands at about $23.4 billion for Bitcoin, $15.5 billion for Ethereum, and $2.7 billion for Solana. This signals that traders are more comfortable using capital and leverage.
“Rising open interest generally signals greater participation and willingness to take risk, especially when it grows alongside price,” they said.
Santiment analysts further noted that Ethereum has seen the most consistent rise in open interest since August, while Solana’s open interest has been more volatile.

However, there appears to be a broader shift towards altcoin derivatives among investors. This is likely informed by the broader rise in the value of altcoins relative to Bitcoin.
CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index is currently at 58/100, which means 58 major-cap altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin in the last 90 days. Altcoin season starts when the index reaches 75/100.
Despite the positive signal that higher open interest represents, analysts have warned of potential risks. Higher leverage means sudden reversals could trigger deeper liquidations, further impacting prices.
