Ethereum news turned toward ETH’s long-term valuation on Nov. 8 after Vitalik Buterin challenged fee-burning models. The Ethereum co-founder argued that decentralization, privacy, and security provide stronger foundations for ETH’s store-of-value role.

Buterin also supported retaining Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559 (EIP-1559), despite declining transaction fee burns. His comments came as Ether traded near $2,240, with buyers defending the $2,200 support region.

The discussion raised questions about Ethereum’s monetary structure as network issuance continued exceeding token burns.

Vitalik Buterin Questions the Fee-Burning Argument

Vitalik Buterin outlined three reasons for treating ETH crypto primarily as a store of value. He questioned whether transaction fee burns create a dependable basis for valuing ETH. Ethereum burns transaction base fees, but the amount changes with network usage.

He pointed to the speculative activity that generated high fees between 2021 and 2023. NFT trading and other cryptocurrency transactions supplied much of that demand. When asset prices fall, traders may spend less on transactions, reducing the fees Ethereum can burn.

Vitalik Buterin questioned financial models that estimate ETH value using future burns. A model could assign a valuation to recurring burns, but the estimate depends on those burns continuing. He argued that fee demand tied to cryptocurrency speculation cannot provide that certainty during market declines.

Ethereum News Raises Questions About Higher Network Fees

Vitalik Buterin warned that pursuing larger burns could change how Ethereum operates. Developers might face pressure to maximize revenue rather than keep the network accessible. Higher transaction costs could also limit participation among users who need affordable, censorship-resistant services.

The Ethereum news compared a revenue-driven protocol with a large company that must fund development. Under one hypothetical model, Ethereum could require about 700,000 ETH annually for research and development. Such a structure could place more decisions about funding and technical priorities under centralized control.

Users have shifted more activity toward lower-cost layer-two systems. Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in March 2024 reduced certain layer-two costs, allowing more activity without equivalent increases in mainnet fees. Lower burns can accompany layer-two growth without indicating a complete loss of demand.

Decentralization Shapes Vitalik Buterin’s ETH Case

Vitalik Buterin said Ethereum’s long-term value comes from its ability to let people hold and transfer assets without depending on central authorities. He pointed to CROPS, which covers censorship and capture resistance, open-source development, privacy, and security.

Vitalik Buterin discussed the growing influence of artificial intelligence and the need for stability. According to Buterin, people may favor networks that can operate reliably despite changes in technology and institutions.

Despite his criticism of burn-centered valuation, Buterin supported keeping EIP-1559. The mechanism destroys the base fee that users pay for transactions, while validators continue receiving newly issued ETH. Supply grows whenever issuance exceeds burns, and contracts when burns exceed issuance.

Ethereum Price Prediction as ETH Defends $2,200

Ethereum price traded around $2,220 on November 8 after sellers rejected a recovery toward $2,500. Ethereum price prediction shows ETH broke below an ascending channel in late October, then failed to regain its support. The latest retreat places attention on the $2,200 area.

A sustained move above $2,300 would mark a recovery, while a return above $2,500 could reopen the $2,800 to $3,000 resistance area. Conversely, a daily close below $2,200 could expose support near $2,000 and then $1,850.

On-chain activity also remains below earlier levels. CryptoQuant’s 30-day average of transactions between externally owned accounts dropped from roughly 1.3 million earlier in 2026 to about 560,000.
