Nvidia Stock Dominates the S&P 500 Sector With 8.2% Weight
Nvidia’s share of the S&P 500 has climbed to a record 8.2%, more than doubling since the start of 2024. The milestone comes as the chipmaker’s market capitalization reached $4.4 trillion last week, cementing its dominance in the index.
To understand the might of Nvidia stock share, let’s take a look at the energy sector. This sector comprises 25 companies and accounts for just 2.7% of the S&P 500. Thus, it’s nearly three times smaller than the size of Nvidia.
Just two years back in 2023, the relationship was entirely reversed, where the energy sector was three times smaller than the size of Nvidia. The surge highlights Nvidia’s unprecedented rise amid booming demand for AI and semiconductor technology.

Since the April lows, the Nvidia stock valuations have literally doubled. Furthermore, the chipmaker has extended its lead over other tech players like Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL). The second-largest firm, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) holds a valuation of $3.8 trillion, as per data from Companies Market Cap.
Nvidia Stock Sees Insider Selling
As per the latest reports, company executives have been selling their Nvidia stock holdings partially, after the massive run-up in the last three months. Last week, company CEO Jensen Huang sold a total of 201,404 shares from his holdings.
As per the Form 4 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), this sell-off happened on August 11, 12, and 13, as per the pre-arranged 10b5-1 trading plan. The shares were sold in the price range between $180-$183, with net proceeds of $40.9 million.
Insider selling typically doesn’t carry much significance. Executives often sell shares for various reasons, mainly to lock in profits rather than signal trouble ahead. It usually provides little insight into future performance. However, when insiders are only selling and not buying, that can be a warning sign.

Despite his selling over the past few months, Jensen Huang holds 73 million shares of Nvidia stock through different trusts, partnerships, and limited liability companies.
