Altseason Index Hits 63 as Traders Eye Explosive Altcoin Rally

Key Insights:

  • The Altseason Index jumped to 63 as BTC investors shifted funds to altcoins.
  • A rate cut by the U.S. Fed this September could spark an altcoin rally.
  • Ethereum price exhibits bullish momentum in expectation of a broader altcoin breakout.

The Altseason index has shown signs of a possible altcoin dominance in the near future. The index is showing a value of 63, indicating an increase in altcoin strength relative to Bitcoin (BTC).

On the daily charts, the price of Bitcoin has exhibited a downtrend, while Ethereum (ETH) is showing signs of recovery. However, other top altcoins are still struggling with their prices.

Interpreting the Altseason Index at 63

The Altseason Index is a data-driven metric measuring how many top altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin over a rolling 90-day period. It ranks the top 50 to 100 coins by market capitalization, excluding stablecoins, and scales from 0 to 100.

A value of 63 means that, over the last 90 days, 63% of the top 50 altcoins have posted better returns than Bitcoin. This represents a notable jump from earlier readings.

It is also an early sign of rotation from BTC to altcoin, but not yet full momentum. An altcoin season is fully confirmed when the Altseason climbs to above 75%. This signals strong altcoin momentum, often leading to parabolic rallies in mid and small-cap tokens.

Hitting 63 marks a breakout into the upper transition zone, showing accelerating altcoin outperformance. Historical patterns show that once the index crosses 50–60, it can accelerate quickly.

That has raised speculations about a looming altcoin season. According to CoinGecko data, the altcoin market cap has increased to $1.68 trillion. Also, the trading volumes surged to more than $89 billion.

Notably, Coinbase earlier predicted that a liquidity wave in late Q3 or early Q4 2025 could accelerate capital rotation from BTC to altcoins.

Key Macroeconomic Catalysts

Discussions about an imminent altcoin season intensified with growing anticipation of the U.S. Federal Reserve reducing interest rates.

Lower rates make cryptocurrencies more attractive by reducing the appeal of low-yield investments. This would encourage capital rotation, meaning funds flowing from BTC into altcoins.

The CME FedWatch Tool, based on 30-day Fed Funds Futures, anticipates a 97.6% likelihood of a 25 basis point cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting. A cut would likely inject liquidity into risk-on assets, accelerating the Altseason index toward over 75 and confirming the next market blowout.

The U.S. producer price index jumped by 0.9% last month. This spike reflects the effect on domestic prices from the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on major countries.

The August US Producer Price Index (PPI), scheduled for release on September 10, could help predict the stance of the Fed in the upcoming meeting on September 17.

Strong jobs, combined with hot PPI, could signal a robust economy, but sticky inflation, delaying cuts, and the altcoin season. Meanwhile, Bitcoin dominance has dropped from the annual high of 65.91% on June 26 to 58.47%, confirming rotation.

Still, market sentiments remain mixed. For instance, the Fear and Greed Index stood at 44, indicating neutrality as volatility returns to the market. Elevated market sentiments are usually necessary for investors to move capital into altcoins.

Ethereum Leading the Altcoin Market

For now, Ethereum is leading the altcoin sector. Over the past 24 hours, the ETH price has surged 1.45% to $4,348.

Other altcoins like XRP and Tron (TRX) follow a similar path to ETH. Within the same period, XRP rallied 0.1%, while TRX jumped by 0.16% However, the price of Binance Coin (BNB) is down 0.6%, Solana (SOL) dropped 0.5%, while ADA plummeted 1.4%.

These declines come amid mild volatility in the general crypto market. Bitcoin, the leading coin, has seen its value decrease by 0.35 to $110,866.
