$5.6B Bitcoin BTC Options Expiry Collides With Whale’s $438M Short Bet

Bitcoin (BTC) entered Friday’s session under heightened pressure as over $5.6 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum options expired. The expiry came amid growing tension in derivatives markets, compounded by a large short bet worth $438 million from a long-time Bitcoin holder.

According to Lookonchain, the so-called Bitcoin OG expanded his short position to 3,600 BTC, roughly $438 million, with an unrealized loss of $3.66 million. The trader opened a position on Hyperliquid, targeting a liquidation level of approximately $139,900.

Massive Derivatives Expiry Adds to Market Volatility

The expiry marked one of the largest in months, with $4.3 billion in Bitcoin and $940 million in Ethereum (ETH) contracts settling on Friday. CryptosRus reported that the event represented a key moment for market positioning, as traders rebalanced portfolios and closed leverage-heavy bets.

“Max pain levels sit around $117,000 for BTC and $4,400 for ETH,” the outlet noted. These levels represent where most options expire worthless typically aligning with the market’s effort to minimize overall profit to traders holding open contracts.

Crypto Rover emphasized the scale of the event in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “$5.66 billion in BTC and ETH options expire today. Expect major volatility!” The remark reflected broader market sentiment that sharp swings could follow as large positions unwind.

Whale Activity Intensifies as Bitcoin BTC Tests Resistance

The Bitcoin OG’s aggressive short followed his earlier sale of 3,000 BTC worth $364 million just two days prior, per Lookonchain. The trader later deposited $80 million in USD Coin (USDC) to open a 6x leveraged short on 3,477 BTC via Hyperliquid and an additional $50 million on Binance.

Such high-leverage positioning near historical highs drew attention from analysts. The liquidation threshold around $140,000 sits just above Bitcoin’s current all-time high, creating a potential short-squeeze setup if BTC continues rising.

Data from GandalfCrypto revealed a thick “liquidity wall” around $126,600, forming a dense cluster of buy orders just beyond record highs. “That kind of heat doesn’t sit idle forever,” Gandalf said, noting that algorithms and whales were eyeing the same magnet zone.

If Bitcoin pushes into that zone, it could trigger cascading liquidations among over-leveraged short traders, adding fuel to the next rally leg.

Bitcoin BTC Traders Eye $117K as Critical Price Pivot

The $117,000 zone, identified as the max pain level for expiring options, became a short-term focal point for traders. If Bitcoin manages to hold above it, analysts suggested it could reinforce market strength heading into mid-October.

CryptosRus highlighted that “if Bitcoin holds above $117K, it signals strength, and often sets the stage for the next move higher.” The comment aligned with historical trends in which BTC tends to regain momentum following large expiries once volatility subsides.

Market participants have long viewed quarterly and monthly expiries as pivotal events shaping short-term direction. During past cycles, Bitcoin often experienced sharp reversals in the days following major settlements as liquidity recalibrated.

However, this time, the heavy whale shorts add complexity. If BTC maintains its upward trajectory toward $130,000–$140,000, the short exposure could trigger a wave of forced liquidations potentially amplifying volatility across the derivatives market.

Market Awaits Next Move as Liquidations Loom

The overlapping factors of massive expiries, whale positioning, and visible liquidity clusters have created a high-stakes environment for traders. While some expect near-term turbulence, others see the setup as a precursor to a broader price breakout.

The $140,000 liquidation mark of the whale short remains the key level to watch. A move beyond it could mark a decisive shift in market sentiment, especially as institutional traders rebalance positions after expiry.

Despite the bearish bet, Bitcoin continued to trade near its recent highs during Friday’s Asian session. The resilience suggests that underlying demand remains firm, even as derivatives-driven volatility clouds short-term direction.

Volatility First, Direction Later

With the $5.6 billion expiry complete, attention now turns to how markets absorb the aftermath. Short-term volatility is expected as traders unwind, but sustained momentum will depend on whether spot demand offsets derivative pressure.

The Bitcoin OG’s high-leverage short, coupled with visible liquidity near $126K–$140K, leaves room for abrupt moves. Analysts say the coming days could define whether Bitcoin extends its uptrend or faces deeper correction pressure.

As GandalfCrypto summed it up: “If Bitcoin starts hunting, that’s the next magnet. Algos see it. Whales see it. Now you do too.”

For now, all eyes remain on the $117K–$140K range, where billions in contracts, leverage, and liquidity collide setting the stage for Bitcoin’s next major move.
