Gold Outperformed in 2025, Why That Could Be Bitcoin’s Next Catalyst

Gold and silver moved first as markets shifted into a defensive stance late in 2025. Gold finished the year near record highs after a rally of roughly two-thirds, while silver delivered triple-digit gains amid tightening supply narratives. Bitcoin, meanwhile, ended 2025 lower and spent long stretches consolidating as investors favored hard assets.

The divergence has carried into early 2026 and is shaping fresh debate about whether crypto tends to follow metals once liquidity returns to risk.

Gold Tops in 2025 as Investors Lean into Hard Assets

Gold outperformed in 2025 as macro uncertainty rose, with price action reaching records in late December before easing into year-end. Market coverage put the 2025 gain near 66% and described Gold

Drivers cited by analysts included safe-asset demand, geopolitical risk, and continued investor interest ahead of 2026 policy decisions. According to recent reports, if the world economy cools, investment demand will remain high through 2026.

The same year-end comparisons added pressure to Bitcoin’s “digital gold” narrative. TradingView-linked reporting indicated that Bitcoin finished 2025 down approximately 6%, while Gold surged more than 65%, setting up a performance gap that traders are watching in 2026.

Silver’s Surge and China Supply Controls

Silver’s rally was even steeper than Gold’s, with sharp swings around late-December record levels. Barron’s reported silver was still up about 153% in 2025 after touching an all-time high before pulling back.

Coverage often linked the rally to supply tightening. Reports cited China’s new export licensing steps for silver and said fresh restrictions helped lift late-2025 demand for precious metals.

Industrial demand also stayed in focus, given Silver’s use in solar, electrification, and data centers. Therefore, tight inventories and heavy industrial use added to the late-year squeeze narrative.

Bitcoin Trails Gold’s Breakout

Another analyst noted Bitcoin and Gold moved in a similar sequence on the chart. Both exhibit a prolonged selloff under a falling trendline, followed by a tight base. Gold broke that downtrend first and accelerated after the breakout. Bitcoin price is now showing a comparable break above its descending resistance after sideways trading.

A clean defense of the recent base, therefore, matters for this structure to hold. If liquidity shifts back toward risk, the fractal narrative remains in focus.

Liquidity, Rate cuts, and ETFs Shape Bitcoin 2026 setup

Macro data late in 2025 strengthened expectations that policy could ease in 2026, despite the uneven data flow. The U.S. CPI showed 2.7% year-over-year inflation in November, while news reports indicated that economists urged caution because shutdown disruptions affected collection and reporting.

In crypto markets, early-2026 flows into regulated products were a key data point. Crypto news reported that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs took in about $471 million in net inflows on January 2, led by BlackRock’s IBIT.

Some coverage also described a short-term cooling in metals after their parabolic 2025 run as Bitcoin moved back above $90,000. TradingView data showed that Gold and Silver declined over several days, while Bitcoin gained over the same period.

Additionally, recent crypto news said Polymarket odds for Bitcoin to outperform gold in 2026 rose to 59%, reflecting growing interest in a catch-up phase if liquidity reaches risk assets.

Meanwhile, analysts reported that adjusted Bitcoin NUPL data framed the latest pullback as a reset, not a broader breakdown. The metric showed that short-term holders were slipping into unrealized losses, while long-term holders remained in unrealized profits.

Following the introduction of U.S. gold ETFs in 2004, a recent analysis also contrasted the declines in Bitcoin with the trend of gold. According to the review, as ETF liquidity increased and access broadened, gold’s peak-to-trough declines became less severe. This implies that spot Bitcoin ETFs could eventually enhance liquidity and mitigate the magnitude of significant market declines.
