Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Believes Crypto AI Agents to Be Next Big Thing

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong rejected the view that cryptocurrency companies must choose between crypto and artificial intelligence. He argued that the technologies could complement each other, with blockchain-based payments providing financial infrastructure for autonomous AI agents.

Armstrong described this emerging model as “Agentic Finance,” or AiFi, in which software agents can make payments, trade and execute financial workflows within user-defined limits.

Brian Armstrong Positions Crypto as Infrastructure for AI Agents

Armstrong compared cryptocurrency with general-purpose technologies such as the internet and electricity. He argued that AI development could strengthen, rather than diminish, the case for programmable blockchain-based payments.

Armstrong argued that autonomous software agents may struggle to use conventional banking accounts and slow payment systems designed for human customers. He said programmable digital payments could allow agents to transact continuously and across online services.

Armstrong said Coinbase has been building this infrastructure through its x402 protocol, Base blockchain, and USDC stablecoin. He added that these projects now power the majority of agentic payments. While coining a new term the Coinbase CEO also defined the emerging ecosystem as Agentic Finance (AiFi), calling it a key focus of the company’s long-term strategy.

Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents on June 11. The service connects supported AI agents to Coinbase accounts through a command-line interface and Model Context Protocol integration, allowing them to trade, pay and execute approved workflows within user-defined limits.

Coinbase CEO Pushes for Bitcoin Security, CLARITY Act

The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act proposes a federal framework dividing oversight of digital commodities and related intermediaries between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon also supported advancing the CLARITY Act, although he said the legislation was not perfect. Any reference to Fidelity should be supported with a direct company statement or removed.

Furthermore, Armstrong’s Coinbase has also joined the Bitcoin Security Consortium in order to protect the BTC blockchain network against the threats of quantum computing. The Coinbase CEO said that although there’s no immediate threat to BTC, the company is taking measures to avoid one in the future.

Armstrong said the firm’s efforts are focused on strengthening long-term resilience against potential quantum computing risks.

AI Coins Stage Strong Rally

Following the comments from Coinbase CEO, establishing a synergy between AI and crypto, AI coins are showing strength. As per the CoinGecko data, top AI coins like Near Protocol (NEAR), Bittensor (TAO), Venice Token (VVV) have gained between 5-10%.

AI-related cryptocurrency tokens are attracting renewed investor interest, supported by developments in the technology sector. There’s growing enthusiasm around high-profile AI IPOs, amid the expanding AI infrastructure.

Market sentiment has also been boosted by announcements from major technology companies, including NVIDIA. AI agent frameworks are also in demand.

Armstrong’s comments reinforced Coinbase’s view that blockchain infrastructure could become an important payment layer for autonomous AI systems. While AI-related cryptocurrencies also traded higher during the session, available market data did not establish a direct connection between the executive’s remarks and token price movements.
