BlackRock advises investors to consider Bitcoin’s allocation in their portfolios carefully
Bitcoin’s price volatility has resulted in drawdowns of 80% since its creation in 2009, despite a 140% surge this year. While the price of BTC has seen significant gains, its history of sharp fluctuations continues to raise concerns.
BlackRock‘s guidance on Bitcoin’s role in investment portfolios was profoundly highlighted by Bloomberg’s Senior ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas. He drew attention within the crypto community.
About this recent development in an X post, he shared excerpts of a new report from BlackRock, which stated;
“In a traditional portfolio with a mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds, those seven stocks each account for an average, about the same share of overall portfolio risk as a 1-2% allocation to Bitcoin.”
BlackRock‘s report highlighted a “risk budgeting” strategy. That advised investors to balance potential rewards with the risks involved carefully. The firm suggested a 1-2% allocation as a starting point for those seeking diverse risk exposure.
The firm views Bitcoin as an asset that moves independently of traditional stocks and bonds. It offers a unique role in a portfolio. The 1-2% range is a way to capture the influence of major tech investments while maintaining a manageable risk profile.
This approach resonates with investors dealing with the challenges of top-heavy market indices. However, given the asset’s volatility, BlackRock cautions that exceeding a 2% allocation to Bitcoin could lead to significant risk exposure.
Despite this, BlackRock acknowledges that as Bitcoin becomes more integrated into mainstream portfolios. The firm sees increased institutional adoption, its price fluctuations may stabilize, altering its risk and return dynamics.
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust Gains Momentum Among Traditional Investors
BlackRock‘s recommendation comes as its IBIT gained significant momentum. The ETF’s growth has bolstered Bitcoin’s appeal to traditional investors. It reshaped the conversation around responsible exposure to digital assets.
IBIT recently crossed the milestone of 500,000 BTC in Assets Under Management (AUM). With this, BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF now oversee over $50 Billion in assets. This achievement is remarkable, considering the product has only been available for trading for less than a year.
The firm views Bitcoin as a legitimate investment option with the potential for substantial returns. However, the excitement surrounding the launch of other crypto ETFs, such as those for Solana and XRP, is waning.
Gary Gensler has expressed concerns over the long-term sustainability of certain crypto products listed on stock exchanges.
