About Mantle
Mantle (MNT) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #51 by market capitalisation. It has a capped maximum supply of 6,219,316,795 MNT, of which 53% is already in circulation. MNT currently trades about 76% below its all-time high of $2.86.
Mantle is an Ethereum layer-2 network that uses optimistic rollup technology combined with an in-house data availability layer called Mantle DA, derived from EigenDA technology. Launched in 2023, it was incubated by BitDAO, a decentralised autonomous organisation with one of the largest treasuries in the cryptocurrency sector, which rebranded to Mantle as part of the same governance process that launched the network. The protocol is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, enabling developers to deploy existing Solidity smart contracts with minimal modification.
MNT is the native gas and governance token. Because the Mantle treasury holds a substantial amount of ETH and other assets accumulated by BitDAO, the network has significant resources to fund ecosystem grants, liquidity incentive programmes, and developer adoption campaigns. What is the connection between Mantle and BitDAO?
Mantle was incubated by BitDAO, a large decentralised treasury DAO. In 2023, BitDAO governance voted to rebrand the organisation to Mantle and merge its treasury with the newly launched Mantle Network. Holders of the former BIT token received MNT through a conversion process. The Mantle treasury, built from years of BitDAO fundraising, remains one of the largest in the sector and is used to fund ecosystem development.
How does Mantle's data availability solution work?
Rather than posting all transaction data directly to Ethereum's mainnet u2014 which is expensive u2014 Mantle uses a separate data availability layer called Mantle DA, based on EigenDA technology, to store transaction data more cheaply. A committee of validators attests to data availability. This approach reduces costs for end users but introduces an additional trust assumption compared with posting data directly on Ethereum's base layer.
What is MNT used for on the network?
MNT serves as the gas token for paying transaction fees on the Mantle network and as a governance token allowing holders to participate in protocol decisions.
