Whether you are a proud owner of a crypto wallet or not, you will surely have heard that cryptocurrency has become quite the popular payment method over the past few years. This intangible yet highly sought-after form of currency can also be used to purchase smaller items like a snack and Starbucks, but more often, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are used to buy big-ticket items, furniture also being one of them.
Shopping with cryptocurrency instead of cash or cards comes with a couple of benefits, the biggest of which is that a Bitcoin wallet gives you greater privacy. No one can track your transactions back to you once you make them, and neither the seller nor any third parties can have access to your financial account information as they potentially could if you paid via debit card or bank transfer.
While Bitcoin is still fairly new to retailers and can’t be used to buy furniture in every furniture store, several stores accept it as a payment option directly, and others accept it indirectly via gift cards or third-party services.
So, if you are looking to buy your next couch or mattress with Bitcoin, or other cryptocurrencies, here’s how (and where) to get started.
Pay Right out of Your Bitcoin Wallet at These Furniture Stores
At the following three stores, shopping with crypto is made possible during the checkout process. You simply choose Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency as a payment option and carry out the transaction as you would with any other currency or payment method.
· Overstock
Overstock.com (which, as of 2023, also does business as Bed Bath & Beyond) sells all sorts of items like home décor and bedding, but it made a name for itself with its furniture. Since 2017, Overstock has been accepting payments via Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, Dash, and other major cryptocurrencies, thanks to its integration with ShapeShift.
· NewEgg
When you think NewEgg, you probably think “tech,” and not furniture. But there is a lot more to this online store than just computers and hard drives. Obviously, they sell furniture for your home office, like desks, shelving, and gaming or regular office chairs, but you’ll see them also selling things like sun decks.
To make the payment, according to the handy payment guide, all you have to do is select the option to pay with Bitcoin via a digital wallet stored on your computer, smartphone, or the internet.
· Beliani
At the time of this writing, Beliani doesn’t have a US store, but if you are reading this from Europe or the UK, you can find a large selection of furniture at Beliani ranging from chairs and couches to kitchen tables to outdoor furniture and more. And, you can pay for it all with the crypto of your choice, as this is one of the few furniture-only stores that accepts a long list of cryptocurrencies during checkout.
Your Furniture Store Doesn’t Accept Crypto? No Problem, Here’s a Shortcut
Not every furniture store accepts Bitcoin, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t use it to buy what you need. Stores like Home Depot, Amazon, and Walmart don’t offer cryptocurrencies as a payment option on their checkout page or in stores, but there’s a way to go about this problem.
Designer Daily reported that one can buy furniture from Amazon with Bitcoin by doing a workaround involving a third-party service. In this case, the service would match you with another user, whom you would pay with Bitcoin. They will then pay for the furniture you want to buy with FIAT. This is a win-win for both parties, you get the furniture you want by paying with crypto, and the other person gets more of it in their wallet. Who wouldn’t like that deal? Granted, there will be some level of commission in this case, but still.
In case you don’t want to involve another person, you can also use Bitcoin to buy gift cards for the store from which you want to buy furniture. Bitpay, for instance, is one example of a service that offers a wide range of gift cards for furniture stores like Wayfair, Walmart, Pottery Barn, and more that you can pay for with cryptocurrency of various types. All you have to do is choose the card for your store (some are in digital form while some may have to be printed and scanned if you use them at a physical store location), select the amount you’ll need for your purchase, and then make the transaction. This way, you pay with Bitcoin without technically paying with Bitcoin, essentially swapping crypto for FIAT. It’s a bit convoluted way of doing things, but yeah, you can do it.
Frontier That Needs Expanding
After seeing all of the available options that this part of the retail industry offers, it’s hard not to feel wanting for a little bit more variety, especially with knowing how big it is and what others are doing in the blockchain space, being it by accepting crypto for their online services or real-life goods. The latter part is probably the reason why we’re not seeing a faster, or to say, a more proactive expansion on this field.
What we usually observe with this combination of physical (selling or moving goods) and “advanced virtual” (paying with cryptocurrency), is that not many are willing to jump on that boat. This is a complete contrast if you modify that “formula” with a more tech-savvy service providers, most common ones offering e-commerce products and offering things like purchasing games with crypto. Could this be due to some level of generational disparity, or does this industry just need to have a more tangible cash flow? It’s hard to tell, but room for improvement is there.
Putting that potential aside, whether a store accepts Bitcoin directly or indirectly, purchasing your next furniture with cryptocurrency is possible. It won’t come swinging hard on their promo pamphlets and takes a bit of self-thought research, but in the end, you’ll be able to offload your crypto wallet.
