What The Mt Gox Situation Means For Bitcoin In 2024

In 2014, one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges, Mt Gox, ceased operations and went into liquidation after it was revealed it had stolen millions of dollars worth of user funds. It caused a major drop in the Bitcoin price and confidence in the cryptocurrency market in general. In 2024, more than ten years later, the case could significantly impact the market as users are finally repaid for their lost coins.

What Happened with Mt Gox?

Originally launched in 2007 as a way for fans of the card game Magic The Gathering to trade cards online, the site was repurposed to trade Bitcoin in 2010. It quickly became one of the top exchanges for users in the cryptocurrency community to trade fiat currency for crypto, becoming the majority processor for Bitcoin trades in 2013. In fact, at one stage, it was reportedly responsible for 70% of all Bitcoin trades.

Despite its importance in the cryptocurrency community, the owners of Mt Gox didn’t employ suitable security protocols, and hackers stole significant numbers of coins in 2011. In the same year, the exchange lost coins due to incorrect network protocols. In February 2014, the company halted withdrawals after reporting suspicious activity, with it later revealed that 950,000 Bitcoin were missing.

The Tokyo-based company behind the Mt Gox exchange filed for bankruptcy and was ordered to liquidate the company. Although 200,000 Bitcoins were later recovered, many coins remained unaccounted for, leading to a serious market crash.

What is the Mt Gox Payout?

While Mt Gox was ordered to liquidate in April 2014, numerous legal challenges and appeals have occurred over the following years. In 2024, the court-appointed trustee overseeing the bankruptcy proceedings stated that payouts to the 20,000 creditors would begin in July 2024.

The Mt Gox payout will involve the company finally paying out the proceeds of liquidation, which will be roughly 141,000 Bitcoins. That would be an incredible figure worth $9 billion at the current price. When Mt Gox declared bankruptcy, the price per coin was around $600, and it’s since increased by more than 10,000%.

Despite losing a significant number of coins, many of the Mt Gox creditors are better off than they would have been, as they’ve essentially been forced to hold a substantial portion of their coins through the various price rises and crashes over the years. Although this is good for creditors, many are worried about the effect that this could have on the crypto market.

How This Payout Could Affect the Price of Bitcoin

In 2014, Mt Gox crashed the Bitcoin market when it stopped withdrawals and declared bankruptcy. Some investors fear a similar impact when the Mt Gox payout begins. The exchange will transfer around $9 billion into Bitcoin to various creditors around the world, and many of them will likely sell.

A 10,000% return on their initial investment is more than many of the early investors in Bitcoin could have ever dreamed of, and after years of waiting, they’ll likely want to cash in. It will create a lot of selling pressure on the market, resulting in more sellers than buyers and a likely drop in the coin value. However, it’s still unlikely to cause any serious crash.

In fact, many of the Mt Gox users were early adopters of Bitcoin and are likely to still be involved in the space. As a result, there’s a good chance that they’ll want to continue holding their assets, only this time, they’ll be more careful not to keep them on an exchange.
