On October 3, Visa launched a new product, Visa Tokenized Asset Platform (VTAP). It will help banks in issuing fiat-backed tokens on blockchain networks. Visa’s banking partners can visit its development platform to tokenize fiat currencies on the blockchain for experimental purposes.
Additionally, Visa expects VTAP to play an essential role in a rapidly growing ecosystem. Their team wants tokenized real-world assets to be issued across different blockchain networks.
Visa launching VTAP is a significant step in revolutionizing the banking and blockchain sectors.
Bringing Fiat Currencies Onchain
Visa Tokenized Asset Platform is set to assist financial institutions in issuing fiat-backed tokens on different blockchain networks. These tokens will maintain stability in blockchain-based financial transactions.
This latest product is accessible through Visa’s development platform. Banks can easily integrate their existing systems into blockchain networks using secure APIs.
Banks can mint, burn, and transfer fiat-backed tokens, such as tokenized deposits and stablecoins.

VTAP is currently available in a test environment like Sandbox. However, there are plans to support live programs in 2025. Visa’s vision is to enable interoperability across different blockchains for banks utilizing the VTAP platform.
In this way, banks can enable multiple use cases and interact with partners and clients on permissioned and public blockchains. Visa commits to enabling secure cross-chain exchanges of tokenized real-world assets using fiat-backed tokens.
Visa’s global head of innovation and digital partnerships, Vanessa Colella, stated that the company is once again pushing the boundaries of the industry with the launch of VTAP. Visa is set to use its tokenization experience to help banks embrace blockchain technologies.
Partnership With BBVA
Spanish bank Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) was the first to test VTAP sandbox functionalities. BBVA has been working in the VTAP sandbox throughout this year.
BBVA has experimented with fiat-backed tokens on testnet blockchains before a live pilot. The pilot will take place on the public Ethereum blockchain in 2025.
Francisco Maroto is the head of Blockchain and Digital Assets at BBVA. He said their team is proud to continue spearheading the exploration of tokenized solutions with Visa through its VTAP platform.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in their exploration of the potential of blockchain technology.
BBVA can broaden its banking services with VTAP. Also, they can expand the market with new financial solutions.
