Metaplanet Reserves Increase In Bitcoin Holdings
Earlier this year, Metaplanet (MSTR) made a series of Bitcoin purchases, and recently, they continued this trend.
On October 1, the company increased its Bitcoin holdings by acquiring an additional 506.745 tokens, valued at ¥1 billion. This latest acquisition pushed their total reserves beyond 500 BTC.
Metaplanet isn’t just buying Bitcoin directly; they’re also active in trading. On October 3, they struck a deal with Singaporean digital asset trading firm QCP Capital.
Metaplanet sold 223 contracts of $62,000 put options as part of this agreement. It is set to expire at the end of 2024.
By selling these options, Metaplanet earned 23.97 Bitcoin in premiums. This strategy highlighted the company’s effort to capitalize on both long-term price growth and short-term market fluctuations.
Earlier this year, Metaplanet revealed its plan to purchase Bitcoin to mitigate economic challenges in Japan. In May 2024, Japan grappled with high government debt, extended periods of negative real interest rates, and a weakening currency.
Metaplanet isn’t the only Japanese company turning to cryptocurrency to boost profits. A June survey by Nomura and Laser Digital revealed that over 500 investment managers in Japan are considering crypto investments.
Metaplanet’s recent Bitcoin purchase underscores its dedication to this strategy, solidifying its position in the cryptocurrency market. This acquisition has also propelled Metaplanet to the 18th spot among publicly listed companies with significant Bitcoin holdings.

MicroStrategy, Marathon Digital Holdings, Galaxy Digital Holdings, Tesla, and Coinbase are leading the list of companies with the largest Bitcoin reserves.

Bitcoin put options are crypto derivatives. These derivatives grant the buyer the right. However, there is an obligation to sell Bitcoin at a predetermined strike price by a specific date.
Simon Gerovich is the CEO of Metaplanet. He explained that this strategy allows the company to increase its Bitcoin reserves without incurring additional financial risk.
He mentioned that the firm aims to generate returns through options strategies on a portion of its assets.
Gerovich announced a partnership with SBI Holdings’ crypto division in early September. This partnership aimed to enhance Metaplanet’s crypto trading, storage, and management capabilities.

On October 3, Bitcoin October 3tomed out at $59,800 before beginning to recover. If this trend continues, a 32% gain could see Bitcoin’s price rise to approximately $77,700 by the end of the month.
