Coinbase Faces $1B Lawsuit Over Delisting Wrapped Bitcoin
  • BiT Global has filed a lawsuit against Coinbase. The firm cited anti-competitive behavior linked to the exchange’s decision to delist wBTC.
  • Following standard listing reviews, Coinbase announced it would take wBTC off its platform by December 19, 2024.

Coinbase is making headlines following recent legal developments. Earlier this week, the exchange secured a significant upper hand against the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (FDIC).

A court ruled favor of Coinbase in an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) case. It criticized the FDIC for excessive redactions in key documents. The court has ordered the FDIC to revise these redactions and submit the required documents to Coinbase by January 3.

Now, Coinbase Global Inc. finds itself under scrutiny once more. This happened as BiT Global filed a lawsuit against the exchange. It provides digital asset custody and management solutions with ties to Justin Sun.

The lawsuit is filed in the Northern District of California. It accuses Coinbase of various infractions related to its decision to delist Wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC).

Coinbase Faces Legal Lawsuit Again: This Time It’s About Wrapped Bitcoin

BiT Global claims in its December 13 filing that Coinbase’s actions were intended to favor its competing product, cbBTC. It alleged that the delisting was a deliberate move to suppress competition.

This legal challenge adds another layer of complexity to Coinbase’s already busy docket of regulatory and legal battles.

When Coinbase delisted Wrapped BTC, it cited its failure to meet listing standards during a recent review. BiT Global disputes this claim. The firm argues that Coinbase’s justification is invalid, especially since it recently listed meme coins like PEPE, WIF, and MOG.

Justin Sun criticized Coinbase. Suggesting hypocrisy, he hinted that Sun-owned Poloniex struggles with proof-of-reserves processes.

BiT Global claims Coinbase’s actions could harm its business and violate state and federal laws. The lawsuit accuses Coinbase of federal antitrust violations and attempts to monopolize the wrapped Bitcoin market.

Why Did Coinbase Decide to Delist wBTC?

On November 19, Coinbase announced it would delist Wrapped BTC by December 19, citing periodic reviews of its listing standards. This decision followed BitGo’s announcement of a strategic partnership with BiT Global for wBTC custody.

wBTC’s primary custodian, BitGo, disclosed that custody would be shared among three entities. That includes BitGo, Bit Global Trust, and a Singapore-based subsidiary. Despite concerns from major DeFi platforms like MakerDAO and Aave, wBTC’s status remained unchanged.

With BiT Global linked to Justin Sun, the partnership became a key part of wBTC’s future. A Hong Kong-based trust company took over part of the custody role. Though some skeptics raised concerns about the shift in control, wBTC’s market cap continued to rise.

Coinbase’s announcement to delist Wrapped Bitcoin was met with sharp criticism from the wBTC team. The team expressed dissatisfaction with the decision’s abruptness.

Coinbase’s European division revealed it would delist Tether’s USDT and other stablecoins that do not comply with the European MiCA regulations.

The exchange informed users that support for six stablecoins would cease. That involves PAX, PYUSD, GUSD, GYEN, DAI, and USDT. At the same time, it would continue to support EUR Coin (EURC) and Circle’s USDC, which comply with MiCA laws.

Is BiT Global Right in Claiming Coinbase Undermines Market Integrity?

In a lawsuit by Kneupper & Covey on behalf of BiT Global, Coinbase is accused of eight offenses. These offenses include monopolization, trade libel, and violations of the Lanham Act.

The 36-page filing argues that Coinbase’s decision to delist Wrapped Bitcoin violates antitrust laws. It could harm BiT Global’s business, potentially causing a loss of over $1 billion in market value.

BiT Global claims that the delisting came shortly after Coinbase launched its competing product. The claim is that the actions of cbBTC and Coinbase are aimed at monopolizing the tokenized Bitcoin space.

The firm is seeking a court ruling to declare the delisting of wBTC illegal and prevent Coinbase from proceeding with it. Additionally, BiT Global argues that Coinbase’s actions undermine the cryptocurrency sector’s integrity.

It pointed out that the company needs to apply its listing standards consistently. It is evidenced by the inclusion of meme coins on its platform.

The plaintiff argues that Coinbase’s decision to list various memecoins has no inherent value beyond jokes. That contrasts with its delisting of WBTC. According to BiT Global, this shows that Coinbase did not follow any consistent listing standards.

The lawsuit highlights concerns about Coinbase’s market influence. It asserted that the exchange’s actions unfairly give its new product, cbBTC, a competitive edge by removing wBTC. BiT Global claims this move disproportionately harms its ability to compete in the market.

Kneupper & Covey, representing BiT Global, argued that Coinbase’s delisting of Wrapped Bitcoin leaves no room for appeal. They claim this move forces wBTC users to adopt cbBTC, violating federal and state laws.

The lawsuit seeks to compel Coinbase to relist wBTC and pay damages for the potential harm to BiT Global’s market valuation.

Is Coinbase Defending wBTC Delisting Amid Ongoing Legal Dispute?

Coinbase has defended its decision to review listed assets regularly. The exchange stated that any asset not meeting its standards would be delisted. A representative from Coinbase explained that the decision to delist wBTC was made after a thorough evaluation.

Coinbase has defended its decision to delist wBTC. It stated its asset review process ensures legitimacy and market value. Only assets that meet its high standards remain listed.

In September 2024, Coinbase launched cbBTC on Ethereum and the Layer 2 network Base. Despite controversy over the delisting of wBTC, cbBTC quickly gained traction. It reached a market capitalization of over $2 billion.

However, wBTC continues to grow in value. Its market cap rose from $8 Billion in August to over $13.4 Billion, making it the largest tokenized Bitcoin asset.

BiT Global’s increasing role in Wrapped Bitcoin signaled the company’s growing influence in the global crypto ecosystem. Its connection to Justin Sun bolstered it.
