Aptos Co-founder’s Exit As CEO: Mo Shaikh To “Start A New Chapter”
  • Muhammad Shaikh has announced his departure from the CEO post.
  • Avery Ching, the current CTO, will replace him.

Aptos Labs, a prominent blockchain development company, is witnessing a dramatic leadership change. Mohammad Shaikh, the co-founder, has declared his intention to leave his position as CEO.

Avery Ching will take over as CEO, while Shaikh will serve as a ‘strategic adviser.’ Ching is the firm’s chief technology officer (CTO).

He and Shaikh co-founded Aptos Labs back in 2021. Aptos Labs is widely known for creating the Aptos blockchain. That is the cutting-edge Layer 1 network, which emerged as an offshoot of Meta’s Diem project.

Mo Shaikh’s Announcement of Stepping Down

On December 19, Shaikh made his decision public to leave the CEO role through an X post. In his farewell announcement, he mentioned, ‘Today I am stepping away from Aptos Labs to start a new chapter.’

The former Aptos Labs CEO started his post by recalling his career’s journey. He talked of how he has always been passionate about building systems that empower people. He highlighted how he began Aptos Labs three years ago and has been active in the blockchain space since 2016.

The goal of establishing this firm was “to create a resilient and scalable foundation capable of creating fair and efficient products for the future.” Shaikh stated.

The co-founder further expressed his confidence in the team and Avery as CEO. Furthermore, he showcased his optimism for the Aptos Labs’ bright future.

He added, “I leave Aptos Labs with the utmost confidence in the team and strongly believe the talent and drive of Aptos Labs will bring our collective vision to life in the near future. Avery will be stepping in as the Aptos Lab’s CEO to drive the company into its next phase of growth.”

Aptos Labs’ Rise Under Shaikh’s Reign

Starting its journey in 2021, Aptos Laps has quickly emerged as a significant player in the blockchain industry. Under Shaikh’s reign, the company launched its Aptos mainnet in October 2022.

Soon, its Layer 1 Aptos blockchain gained humongous popularity in the market. This was due to its scalability and developer-friendly approach.

As CEO, Mohammad Shaikh secured substantial funding for the firm. Starting from a seed round in March 2022, Aptos Labs secured $250 Million. Later, in July 2022, in a Series A round, the firm secured $150 Million.

The company initiated 2 more funding rounds on September 15, 2022, and September 19, 2024. However, the amount raised in these rounds hasn’t been disclosed yet. The investors include a16z, Multicoin Capital, FTX, Jump Crypto, Franklin Templeton Investments, and Binance Labs.

Under Shaikh’s leadership, Aptos Labs established key partnerships with industry giants. The firm established strategic alliances with BlackRock, Google, Microsoft, Mastercard, and Franklin Templeton.

Avery Ching Takes Charge

A seasoned blockchain expert, Avery Ching, will lead the Aptos into its next chapter.

Ching announced his succession in an article on X titled “Entering the Next Phase of Growth and Innovation for Aptos Labs as CEO”. In the article, he stated, ‘I’m honored to share that I’ll be taking on a new role as @AptosLabs CEO.’

He clarified that his top goal will be helping and expanding the aspirational Aptos builders and community. Additionally, he would support advancing web3 technologies and high-velocity pioneering products.

Ching further revealed his plan to expand Aptos worldwide. He mentioned, “Regional growth in India, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and China will explode in 2025.”
