Andreessen Horowitz has decided to close its London office. He has announced that he will refocus on the US market as Trump returns as US President. He made this decision after Donald Trump promised to head a pro-crypto government.
The Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm announced the decision through a statement by Anthony Albanese. He is the chief operating officer of its crypto unit. This company is widely known for its investments in blockchain and digital assets,
Closure of London Office After Short-Lived Expansion
Andreessen Horowitz opened its London office in 2023. It was the first time this venture capital firm expanded internationally. The firm selected the UK as the first location because of the availability of a robust financial system.
Another reason for this selection was the government’s desire to establish the country as a cryptocurrency hub. The decision was met with approval by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Sunak had earlier shown confidence in the country’s potential in using blockchain technology.
Albanese was more specific about the shutdown of the X. There, he announced that the company would cease operations in the United Kingdom.

In an email to staff, he wrote: “We have decided to concentrate on the US due to the new administration’s political activity and, therefore, will be shutting down our office in the UK.”
Nevertheless, he confirmed that the company continues to seek opportunities to invest in crypto startups across the globe. That includes the United Kingdom, too.
Trump Administration’s Crypto Policies Influence Decision
The pullback from the UK is being made as the United States introduces new policies that are friendly towards digital currencies. This week, President Trump issued an executive order. The order is intended to strengthen the United States’ position in the cryptocurrency markets.
The order creates the Presidential Working Group on Digital Asset Markets. This will focus on developing policies for digital assets, including stablecoins.
This executive order by Trump also has provisions for establishing a National Digital Asset Repository. It will highlight the government’s position in favor of blockchain-based financial systems.
The change in US policy has helped improve investor sentiment. Furthermore, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have risen in value following the victory of Donald Trump.
Leadership Changes and Impact on UK Crypto Investments
Sriram Krishnan, who was named to head Andreessen Horowitz’s expansion into the UK, also resigned from his position last year. The Trump administration has appointed him as senior policy adviser on artificial intelligence.
He departed from the UK office, and there was no dominant leadership to guide the office. Despite the decision to shut down, the firm maintains that the UK is a potential market for crypto investments.
It has earlier invested in other UK-based blockchain companies, including Arweave, Aztec, and Improbable. “This doesn’t change our confidence in the UK’s growing role in crypto and blockchain,” Albanese said.
Broader US Crypto Market Developments
The Trump administration’s view on cryptocurrency has also affected other financial institutions. The US SEC recently removed Staff Accounting Bulletin No. 121. This had placed stringent reporting standards on providers of crypto asset custody services.
The rule had come under a lot of criticism from industry participants. It complained that it raised compliance costs and deterred banks from providing digital asset services.
At the same time, the head of Morgan Stanley, Ted Pick, said that the bank cooperates with American regulators. They are considering the possibility of operating in the cryptocurrency market.
In an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Pick made remarks on Morgan Stanley. He emphasized that Stanley is exploring how it can interact with digital asset markets in light of the changing legal framework.
Furthermore, Senator Cynthia Lummis has been assigned to chair the new Senate Digital Assets Subcommittee in the United States. This subcommittee will address the matters related to the regulation of cryptocurrencies.
