Vitalik Buterin Reports $70K Profit from Polymarket in 2025

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared details of his prediction market activity in 2025. He disclosed that he invested about $440,000 on Polymarket and earned $70,000 in profit. This equals a gain of roughly 16%.

His approach was careful and rational, not high-risk speculation. Buterin explained that he looks for markets driven by hype and bets against unlikely outcomes.

He also reflected on the state of crypto, warning that too much focus on profit could harm innovation. His comments highlight both opportunities and risks in prediction markets and the wider blockchain industry.

Anti-Insanity Mode Strategy

Buterin calls his method “anti-insanity mode.” He scans markets for irrational hype and places contrarian bets. Examples include betting against Donald Trump winning the Nobel Peace Prize and against the U.S. dollar collapsing to zero.

These markets were inflated by partisan enthusiasm or panic-driven narratives. His strategy profits when hype fades and reality returns.

Buterin has used prediction markets before. In 2020, he earned about $58,000 from bets related to the U.S. presidential election, though not exclusively on Polymarket.

He views these platforms as valuable “social epistemic tools” that can cut through misinformation better than traditional media or social networks. However, he criticized their current focus on trivial, short-term questions such as hourly Bitcoin price movements or weekly sports outcomes.

He argued that these markets lack long-term societal impact. To improve their utility, he suggested concepts such as Futarchy, in which prediction markets guide governance decisions. Projects such as MetaDAO have already experimented with this idea.

Concerns About Oracles

Buterin raised concerns about oracle security. Oracles are data feeds that resolve bets. He cited a Polymarket bet on Russian control of a Ukrainian city. The market relied on maps from the Institute for the Study of War.

An employee’s erroneous update swung the market dramatically and could have cost millions before correction. This example showed the risks of manipulation or human error in centralized data sources.

He compared solutions like Bloomberg’s trusted feeds with decentralized alternatives such as UMA and Chainlink. But he warned of flaws in token-voting systems, where large holders could collude. He stressed that oracle design remains a critical challenge for prediction markets.

Growth of Polymarket and Future of Crypto

Polymarket grew rapidly in 2025. App installs surged 1,200%. Weekly trading volume rose from $500 million to nearly $6 billion. Buterin was an early investor in the platform’s $70 million funding round in 2024, alongside Founders Fund.

On-chain analysis of his verified Polymarket account since March 2023 shows 141 mostly small trades. That resulted in a net loss of $1,120.

This suggests his larger profitable bets may have been conducted via anonymous wallets. The discrepancy highlights the opaque nature of crypto trading, even for public figures.

Looking ahead, Buterin emphasized the need for crypto to integrate responsibly with AI. He called for decentralized social platforms, smarter DAOs, and stablecoins tied to real-world metrics like CPI.

He warned that the industry risks becoming a “lost soul” if it focuses only on profit and speculation. For him, the future of Ethereum and crypto depends on reclaiming foundational ideals while embracing innovation.
