Bitcoin Spot ETFs and the Issuers Behind Them

Follow The Market Periodical

For over a decade, asset managers sought regulatory approval to list spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds on US national securities exchanges. The SEC’s January 2024 approval of eleven such products simultaneously represented the resolution of that long regulatory dispute and the opening of a new chapter in Bitcoin’s institutional adoption. The funds that launched on that date — and the established asset managers behind them — brought credibility, distribution scale, and fiduciary infrastructure that the cryptocurrency market had not previously attracted in this form.

What a Spot Bitcoin ETF Actually Does

A spot Bitcoin ETF holds actual Bitcoin — not futures contracts or equity in Bitcoin-related companies — as its underlying asset. The fund purchases and custodies Bitcoin directly, and issues shares that trade on a stock exchange. The share price tracks the net asset value of the Bitcoin held in the fund, with an authorised participant (AP) mechanism designed to keep the market price aligned with NAV through continuous arbitrage.

This structure distinguishes spot ETFs from the Bitcoin futures ETFs that the SEC had previously approved, beginning with ProShares’ BITO in October 2021. Futures-based products hold monthly Bitcoin futures contracts on the CME rather than spot Bitcoin. They introduce roll costs — the ongoing expense of selling expiring contracts and purchasing new ones — that cause performance to diverge from spot Bitcoin returns over time. Spot ETFs do not have this structural drag, making them a more faithful representation of Bitcoin’s price performance for buy-and-hold investors.

The Major Issuers and Their Products

BlackRock launched the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which rapidly accumulated assets under management to become the largest Bitcoin spot ETF by a significant margin. BlackRock’s existing relationships with institutional investors and its established ETF distribution infrastructure gave IBIT a substantial first-mover advantage in the institutional channel, even in a market where all competitors launched on the same day.

Fidelity launched the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC). Notably, Fidelity is one of the few issuers that custodies its own Bitcoin rather than outsourcing custody to a third party — a function Fidelity performs through its Digital Asset Services subsidiary. This vertical integration is presented by Fidelity as a security and operational control advantage.

Grayscale converted its existing Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) — which had operated as a closed-end fund since 2013 — into a spot ETF upon approval. GBTC entered the new product era with the largest pre-existing Bitcoin holdings of any fund, but also with a management fee of 1.5%, substantially higher than competitors. The result was persistent net outflows from GBTC in the months following the conversion, as investors migrated to lower-cost alternatives. Grayscale subsequently launched Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) with a lower fee to compete in the cost-sensitive tier.

Invesco and Galaxy Digital partnered to offer the Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCO). VanEck launched HODL. WisdomTree launched BTCW. Bitwise, a crypto-specialist asset manager, launched the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) and distinguished itself by committing 10% of profits to open-source Bitcoin development. Valkyrie (now Franklin Templeton) and Franklin Templeton also launched competing products.

Custody: Who Holds the Bitcoin

With the exception of Fidelity, the major spot Bitcoin ETF issuers rely on Coinbase Custody as their qualified custodian. Coinbase’s role as the dominant ETF custodian has become a significant revenue line for the exchange, and it represents a structural linkage between the ETF market’s growth and Coinbase’s financial performance. The concentration of custody with a single provider has been noted by some analysts as a systemic risk worth monitoring, though Coinbase Custody operates under regulatory oversight as a New York State-chartered limited purpose trust company.

Custody for a spot Bitcoin ETF involves holding private keys that control the underlying Bitcoin. The custodian is responsible for security architecture, key management, insurance, and regulatory compliance around the custody function. The quality of this infrastructure is a legitimate due-diligence consideration for institutional allocators selecting among competing products.

Fee Competition and the Investor Calculus

The competitive landscape among spot Bitcoin ETF issuers has driven management fees to historically low levels for a new asset class. Several issuers launched with promotional zero-fee periods, and ongoing expense ratios have settled in a range from approximately 0.19% to 0.25% for the major low-cost providers — competitive with some broad equity index funds. GBTC at 1.5% sits in a different tier and primarily retains holders with embedded capital gains who face tax consequences from switching.

For investors choosing among spot Bitcoin ETFs, the primary differentiators are therefore management fee, trading liquidity (measured by daily volume and bid-ask spread), issuer track record, and, for institutional investors, the custodian’s regulatory standing and insurance coverage. The product category is functionally commoditised at the low-fee end; the decision calculus is similar to selecting among competing S&P 500 index funds.
