CoreWeave Stock Analysis as Elon Musk Predicts Widespread Neocloud Failures

CoreWeave stock extended its sell-off as Elon Musk warned about financial risks facing artificial intelligence (AI) cloud providers. Shares closed at $54.24 on Oct. 23, roughly 71% below their record high.

The warning followed rising corporate borrowing costs and growing concerns about AI infrastructure investments. Gartner separately predicted widespread consolidation among neocloud operators before 2030.

CoreWeave Stock Falls as Elon Musk Warns About Neoclouds

Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, is warning about neocloud companies like CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN. In an X post, he said there will be widespread neocloud failures due to the credit market.

Musk said that the debt market has largely shut off access to financing for companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers. He expects over 200 neocloud companies to fail, with only a handful of them surviving.

A major failure in the neocloud industry would hurt CoreWeave, the biggest player in the sector. On the positive side, unlike other firms, CoreWeave has a diverse customer base, including the largest AI labs and financial services companies like Jane Street. This is different from other firms like Nebius and IREN that have a handful of clients.

Still, signs of stress in the credit market have accelerated. CoreWeave’s bond yields have continued rising, with those maturing in 2031 yielding 15%. That is a big number considering that the ten-year Treasury yields have jumped to 5%.

CoreWeave is Facing Major Challenges

On paper, CoreWeave is doing well, with its revenue growth being among the best. Yahoo Finance data shows that analysts expect that its revenue will jump by 150% to $12.8 billion this year. It made $5.13 billion last year.

The revenue will then jump to $26.4 billion next year, representing a 105% annual growth. This growth will surge as it continues fulfilling its commitments to its customers.

CoreWeave’s main challenge is that this growth is coming at a cost. Its annual capital expenditure this year is expected to be near $40 billion. This means that it will need to raise cash, either through debt or equity to finance this growth. The financing will be significantly expensive now that its bond yields are soaring and fears of the AI bubble are significant.

CoreWeave stock is also facing the competition risk as more companies enter the neocloud industry. The most important ones are SpaceX and Meta Platforms. SpaceX has already taken large orders from Google, Anthropic, and Reflection AI. Meta Platforms, a top client for many neocloud companies, is also seeking to sell its excess capacity to other customers.

The competition is also coming from smaller names like Nscale, Lambda, RIOT Platforms, The RUM Group, and MARA Holdings.

Further, there is a risk that the company will need to depreciate its chips faster than expected. Its modeling suggests that the useful life of these chips is 6 years, while analysts believe it is less than 4 years.

CoreWeave Stock Price Technical Analysis

Technical analysis suggests that the CRWV stock has more downside risk in the near term. It has already plunged below the important support level of $64, its lowest level in November and December last year.

CoreWeave has also formed a head-and-shoulders pattern, a common bearish reversal sign in technical analysis. Also, it has slumped below the 50-day moving average, while the ADX indicator has risen, suggesting that the downward trend is accelerating.

Therefore, the stock will likely continue falling in the foreseeable future. The initial target will be $50 followed by the all-time low of $33.20. On the other hand, a move above $64 will invalidate the bearish outlook.
