Key Insights:
- XRP faces increased selling pressure amid a significant decline in trader sentiment.
- Technical indicators confirm a bearish trend, with support levels targeting $0.60.
- Retail traders on Upbit drive major sell-offs, while XRP whales remain largely unaffected.
XRP price dropped sharply during the first week of April, falling from around $2.15 to $1.78. The token lost 16.62% in 24 hours and is down nearly 14.88% over the week, leaving traders uncertain about its short-term direction.
The sell-off came alongside a surge in trading volume, pointing to rising market-wide liquidations and panic exits. Still, despite the recent losses, XRP remains up 199% year-over-year, largely driven by its rally in late 2024.
Bearish Shift in XRP Price Momentum
A sudden shift in market momentum has emerged, with both technical and sentiment indicators pointing toward increased bearish pressure in the short term. The recent price decline indicates a rapid transition in trader positioning.
Analyst Cole Garner highlighted the dramatic change in long and short ratios for XRP on Bitfinex. In a recent chart, the XRPUSDLONGS/XRPUSDSHORTS ratio surged from 9.5 to 16, signaling growing optimism. However, this optimism quickly reversed, with the ratio collapsing to 14, indicating either long liquidations or a rise in short positions.

Garner projects a continued decline of 7.2329 points in the ratio, representing a 46.86% drop. This sentiment shift signals growing caution in the market, particularly across derivatives. The increased short positioning and collapsing long positions further underscore the fragile confidence among traders. Notably, Garner’s analysis suggests that this bearish pressure may persist, urging traders to reconsider their positions in the short term.
Technical Indicators Point to Further Losses
In addition to the changes in trader positioning, technical analysts have also expressed concerns about XRP’s price movement. Jesse Colombo, another market analyst, noted that XRP had officially broken below its long-standing support zone of $2.00–$2.20, confirming the formation of a classic Head and Shoulders pattern. This technical pattern, which spans from mid-December to March, indicates that the digital asset may be poised for further declines.

The breach of the neckline in early April marked a significant shift, and analysts are now targeting a major support level near $0.60, implying a complete unwind of XRP’s parabolic rally in Q4 2024. While some traders remain hopeful that XRP could reclaim the $2.20 level to invalidate this bearish breakdown, the overall technical projections suggest further downside risks. The combination of deteriorating sentiment and high sell volumes has raised concerns about the asset’s short-term prospects.
Sell-Off Pressure Evident
The decline in XRP’s price has been further exacerbated by significant sell pressure on the XRP/KRW trading pair on Korea’s largest exchange, Upbit. According to order flow and volume expert Dom, a large percentage of trade orders on Upbit have been sell orders over the past three days.

Retail investors accounted for 50.4% of the volume, executing nearly 459,100 trades during the dip. The panic sell-offs highlight how retail behavior is amplifying short-term losses, while whale wallets have stayed mostly intact.
A review of on-chain activity shows minimal movement from addresses holding more than 100,000 XRP, suggesting large holders are choosing to sit through the volatility rather than exit positions.
Diverging Behavior Between Whales and Retail
This divergence between whales and retail traders signals a strategic divide in the XRP market. Retail participants are actively exiting on short-term panic, while whales continue holding, perhaps waiting for more favorable macro or regulatory catalysts.
The next few sessions will be crucial. If XRP breaks lower toward $0.60, market structure could shift firmly bearish. On the flip side, a recovery above $2.00–$2.20 would invalidate the head-and-shoulders pattern and offer hope for bulls.
