Follow The Market Periodical

Key Insights:

  • Bitcoin hit $109K as U.S. and Japan bond yields surged.
  • Institutions are reducing U.S. equity exposure and pivoting to Bitcoin.
  • Japan’s $1.13T Treasury holdings are now at risk of unwinding.

Bitcoin climbs to $109K as U.S. and Japanese bond yields spike. With Treasury demand falling, investors seek refuge in BTC, reshaping global risk dynamics.

Bitcoin Price Hits $109K as Macro Crisis Becomes a Bitcoin Catalyst

Bitcoin (BTC) continued its upward trajectory this week, hitting $109,641 amid deepening turmoil in the global bond market. Once sensitive to macroeconomic instability, Bitcoin now appears to benefit from it.

The shift comes as U.S. Treasury yields surge and Japan—the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt—sees its own long-term bond yields skyrocket. Investors are reassessing traditional safe havens, and Bitcoin is increasingly seen as a viable alternative.

According to CoinGlass, assets under management in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) now exceed $104 billion—an all-time high. The move marks growing institutional interest in Bitcoin as more than just a speculative asset.

U.S. Debt Crisis Turns Treasurys Into a Liability

The U.S. national debt has crossed $36.8 trillion. The interest burden is forecast to reach $952 billion in 2025. As bond yields rise, servicing this debt becomes costlier, raising concerns over long-term sustainability.

Yields on 30-year U.S. bonds hit 5.15% on May 22, the highest since Oct. 2023 and levels last seen in 2007. The 10-year yield now stands at 4.48%, with the 5-year and 2-year yields at 4.0% and 3.92%, respectively.

This inversion unwind has pushed the 5-year to 30-year spread to 1.00% for the first time since Oct. 2021. Investors now anticipate persistent inflation and a prolonged period of elevated rates.

Despite his past rhetoric, U.S. President Donald Trump may struggle to reverse this trend. The Federal Reserve has resisted cutting rates or restarting quantitative easing, concerned about reigniting inflation.

Trump could pressure Fed Chair Jerome Powell, but even that may backfire. Political interference in central banking would likely erode investor confidence further, not restore it.

Japan’s Bond Shock Adds Pressure on Treasurys

Japan has long been a pillar of support for U.S. debt, holding $1.13 trillion in Treasurys—more than any other country. That dynamic is now at risk.

Since March, the Bank of Japan has shifted from negative rates to 0.5%. Japanese long-dated bond yields are now spiking. The 30-year yield surged by 100 basis points to 3.1%. The 20-year sits at 2.53%, its highest since 1999.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba warned parliament on May 19 that Japan’s debt position was “worse than Greece.” With a debt-to-GDP ratio near 260%, Japan’s domestic bond market stress could trigger broader repercussions.

The divergence between Japan’s long-term and short-term yields signals institutional repositioning. Reuters reported that major pension and insurance funds are now reconsidering U.S. bond exposure, which may lead to major unwinds.

Bitcoin Benefits From Flight Out of Treasurys

Traditionally, investors rush to Treasurys during times of economic stress. That trend appears to be reversing. Bitcoin and U.S. equities are now rising as bond volatility increases.

Institutional investors have reduced their U.S. equity exposure to the lowest levels since May 2023, according to a Bank of America survey cited by The Kobeissi Letter. A net 38% are underweight equities.

Instead, capital is moving into Bitcoin. Multiple analysts on X highlighted the shift. Captain Faibik said BTC has defended a major trendline and now shows “strong momentum.” BitBull noted a breakout from consolidation with $155K in sight, pending confirmation.

Cas Abbé added that Bitcoin’s resilience despite $1 billion in long liquidations and low volume was bullish. “I can smell a new ATH again,” he said.

The divergence in market behavior underscores Bitcoin’s changing role. It no longer behaves solely as a high-risk asset. For many, it’s emerging as a politically neutral store of value—akin to gold but with higher upside.

Bitcoin Breaks Old Narratives Amid Global Realignment

Bitcoin’s climb to $109K reflects more than price speculation. It signals a deeper change in global risk perception.

Rising U.S. and Japanese yields, downgraded U.S. credit ratings, and institutional rotation all point to weakening confidence in fiat-based debt systems.

Bitcoin now straddles two once-contradictory identities. It is acting both as a high-performing asset and as a safe haven.

With macro uncertainty showing no signs of easing, the path of least resistance may continue to tilt upward. Whether Bitcoin reaches $115K this week or $155K later, its trajectory appears increasingly tied to the crumbling trust in traditional finance.
