Barclays To Block Credit Card Crypto Purchases From June 27

Key Highlights:

  • Barclays bans all cryptocurrency credit card transactions for UK customers, effective June 27, 2025.
  • The decision is based on risk management, consumer protection, and the lack of regulatory coverage for crypto assets.
  • The ban contrasts with emerging support for digital assets in the UK, including lifting the ETN retail investor ban.

Barclays Bank has declared a blanket prohibition on using credit cards to purchase cryptocurrencies. The policy will be implemented on June 27, 2025, covering all the Barclaycards issued in the UK.

The bank says rising market risks drove the decision. It also pointed to a lack of consumer protections as a key concern.

Barclays Implements Crypto Ban Citing Debt and Risk Exposure

Barclaycard verified through its official site that it will block any crypto-related transactions through credit cards starting June 27. The bank said unpredictable price fluctuations may put customers in an untenable debt position.

It also highlighted the lack of cover with the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. The organization seeks to protect clients against economic damage from crypto asset exposure.

The new limit is only on the purchases made with the Barclaycard credit lines and not debit purchases. Barclays explained that the move was driven by a commitment to protecting its customers’ financial well-being.

It emphasized that the decision wasn’t rooted in any hostility toward cryptocurrencies. The policy is part of a trend of UK financial institutions responding to crypto risks. Several banks, such as Monzo and Starling, have already limited card payments to exchanges such as Binance.

The decision followed earlier warnings from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority. These warnings were about the operations of Binance Markets Limited in the country.

Industry Responds as Access to Crypto Gets Restrained

The news has received mixed responses from both the financial and crypto circles. Riccardo Tordera-Ricchi, the Payments Association, condemned the move, saying equating crypto investment to gambling is unfair.

He observed that informed customers must be left to decide how to utilize credit within their capacity. This ruling concerns many investors because it will impact the retail involvement in the crypto market.

The industry is already facing the heat of the world economic uncertainty, high interest rates, and the changing regulatory environment. The restrictions imposed by Barclays can also exclude casual or first-time investors from exposure to digital assets.

Other financial companies are going in a different direction. Recently, Mastercard has joined Chainlink to provide direct onchain purchases of crypto.

Meanwhile, the UK financial regulator is revisiting its position on crypto products, such as exchange-traded notes (ETNs), for retail clients.

Barclays’ Move Marks Wider Regulatory Shift in UK Banking

The position of Barclays reflects growing caution among traditional banks toward digital assets. It highlights a broader trend of skepticism in the financial sector. Nevertheless, the ruling comes when the UK is rebalancing its regulatory regime to promote innovation in cryptocurrencies.

The Financial Conduct Authority recently said it would remove its retail crypto ETN trading prohibition. David Geale of the FCA indicated that removing the ban on ETNs promotes consumer liberty and market expansion.

Nevertheless, he pointed out that crypto is still risky and should be cautiously approached. In line with the global trend, the UK also released a draft law this year to control cryptocurrencies.

The retail investors are experiencing increased friction in accessing cryptocurrency through traditional financial products. Barclaycard can use other banking services or on-chain solutions, as it prevents transactions.

Certain UK citizens have already complained about freezing their accounts and delays when using crypto services. Crypto enthusiasts have lamented what they perceive as excessive action.

The aggrieved users contend that the same is not done to gambling sites or speculative stock trading. They feel they ought to have a say on how to use their money, particularly as digital assets come of age.
